It won't work. The K-30/K-50 used entirely different hardware from the K-x. Even if you could somehow force the K-50 firmware onto the K-x it would likely destroy the camera.

Exactly what I saw. It is just cool to see and I was expressing that. :)

Software / Firmware Version = K-50 Ver. 1.10 :eek::cool:

That would be exciting. I think some of us were concerned the lack of AF points on the K-500 was hardware based and could cause an issue..

Ah so there is more to it. Did you try to load the firmware with a simple file rename? When I tried that the K-30 would see the K-50 firmware, was not willing to give it a go when I owned a K-30 as 4 years ago it was a 650 dollar camera. Probably fails the checksum natively but still curious..

Did you actually do more than rename?

Those are very different I suspect.. you'd REALLY have a yellow brick after that attempt.

It is a nice thought at least.
But the only thing that might come across is your K-3 in a UPS box across the country to Precision for repair after it has bricked.:lol:

No.. really wouldn't try that. The K-50 firmware only works on the K-30 because its the same hardware (apparently). Ricoh just changed the body shell and tweaked the firmware. The KP is most certainly not using the same hardware as the K-3.

Cool. So my theory actually worked.. Thanks for being brave enough to try! You should have KAF4 / PLM support..

I believe the K-50 was listed as having a larger max ISO but unsure if that is just a software 'upgrade' or not.
When I owned a K-30, I discovered one could theoretically patch it with the firmware for the K-50 by simply renaming the K-50 firmware to one of the K-30's. However, I was not brave enough to let it proceed. The K-30 was seeing the firmware file on the SD card though (asked me if I wanted to flash with that firmware) and didn't just ignore it like it would have otherwise.
I suspect it is the same camera hardware with a firmware change... if you are willing to potentially brick your K-30 you could give it a go.. but then again you could potentially brick your K-30!
Would be neat though if confirmed.. could mean whatever work done for the K-30 would be directly available to the K-50!

Thank you for taking the time to explain in some depth the view for your project. I surely hope you understood my comments were not whining or meant to be negativistic, but rather confusion and lack of understanding of what the project was aiming to do! (Just saying 'like CHDK or Magic Latern' is vague I think)
The bullets certainly read excitingly!

Do you suspect there might be a firmware development for the K7/K5 series cameras at some point then? I mean killer functionality for the K-30/K-50 would be fantastic. But I'm confused at the scope of your project. Perhaps some clarification on what you plan to see in the future would help everyone align with your goals. Is this strictly going to be a firmware hack for the K-30 and modern processor based Pentax bodies? Do you plan to branch out to other Pentax cameras? What is 'killer functionality' with respect to the camera bodies in question?
I don't mean to dismiss the hard work you have done, but rather would like to align our goals with your goals on the project. So far, from your OP, I can only see that you are working on restarting Pentax firmware hacking on the K-30 and have goals on getting a framework rolling. But no mention of dream potential features or modifications once the framework is working. Where would YOU like to see this project arrive?

Both CHDK and Magic Latern work on rather ancient camera bodies.. so why not the K-5 series?
That said, I suspect this will be a long long development project to get to that level.. so perhaps looking at the K-3 *would* be a wise next camera to pick since it will likely be old and cheapish to buy by that time.

I don't think it is. Look at the last page: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/32-digital-processing-software-printing/2...ml#post2743293
Hence my request for tethering here. So, please, consider tethering support in Lightroom for the K-5/K-5ii in this project. :) ---------- Post added 03-31-14 at 06:40 PM ---------- Btw, as an aside, you can get the K-30 to 'see' the K-50 firmware file by renaming the K-50 firmware to that of the K-30 file name. I would **NOT** suggest trying to actually update the K-30 with a K-50 firmware... if it fails, your camera may very well become bricked. And more than likely break warranty.
I only bring this knowledge up as it does make me wonder how much different they really are.... the firmwares..

Full tether support in Lightroom would be nice for K-5/K-5ii series.
