Yay. That's a rather vague explanation (I was curious what specifically broke) but at least it is repaired to your satisfaction. :)

Hmmm.. go here and enter the phone number you included with your camera: Precision Camera | Repair Status Lookup

See if it shows you a status.. maybe that will provide a clue. Beyond that, you'll (we'll) discover tomorrow why. I'm interested myself.. that is an awfully short turn around.

This is what I got in email when they finally responded to my questions:

They also provided a quote (which was the same on their [Precision's] website).

If its warranty, it shouldn't cost anything unless the damage is beyond the scope of the warranty (drops for instance).

I sent my 16-50 to them 3x and each time they sent it back with the same front and rear lens cap. And I know they looked at it at least once because the rear mounting ring was replaced (shiny, unscuffed metal) in one of their repair attempts. Before they completely replaced it with a new lens.

That said, I sent them a generic front and rear lens cap just in case.. Actually, now that I think of it they kept the front and rear lens caps the 3rd time but they gave me Pentax ones in the box of the new lens.

I still wouldn't send them prized accessories.. and I took the batttery and SD card out of the camera when they asked for that too on the 3rd repair attempt.

Bingo! If you don't mind them spending a month or so looking at your lens.. then go for it. However, some of us find that practice poor due to the terms of their own services and the fact that really they are keeping your property (lens) indefinitely. Meanwhile you're without your lens and your warranty time is being eaten up... your lens, your call.. but this seems like a pretty rough deal on your part... especially since no word of why or how long it will be in Japan or if they are even correcting the issues with it. And no one outside of the company knows because their communication skills with their customers absolutely stink..

If there is a production flaw then it's going to take several months at least to identify, correct, and reproduce a batch of lenses to get one to you. And if not well they could have saved you the hassle and just shipped you a new one from the get go.

Agreed. I am very interested in the outcome (Positive or Negative). And any information you get as to WHY the lens was sent to Japan and maybe even what they did (repair it there, study it, etc).

Completely agreed, Rupert.

They tout a 5-7 day turn around. If they can't meet the terms on their website, they need to find an agreeable form of accommodation or stop touting 5-7 day return times.

In this situation, lack of communication on Precision's part is the key element for me. That and they really should have just offered a new lens imo.

BUT, perhaps, they think they've found a defect in the manufacturing or design and don't want to send him another lemon if something needs to be updated.. that, again, is where communication comes into play.

Either way.. staying silent and having to prod the repair facility is not a way to handle repair services. The only way to stop this is to both complain about repair services in public places and keep bugging Ricoh about it until they get tired of hearing about it.

I'd go one further and avoid Pentax lenses when possible... unless you can eat the cost of buying new lenses whenever they poop out.

I just thought of one plus though -- if Ricoh Japan is repairing it, it might actually be a competent repair performed! THAT might be worth waiting for!!

Yeah.

I find that unusual... to ship the lens TO Japan.. usually they ship parts FROM Japan.

I wonder if Pentax HQ wants to study the failure in your lens in order to determine if improvements need to be made to the design or manufacturing? But, even if this ends up being the case, WHY wouldn't they just ship you a new one versus holding you up like this?

Are you sure they didn't order parts from Japan?

I'm pretty sure they DISCARD all packing material. The box considered packing material... I wouldn't risk it.
