After looking at a couple reviews on it recently, I am surprised too. TCS review particularly was informative because they specifically compared the IQ with a K-3 in their review. At ISO 3200 it was obvious in the image samples.. the NX1 has darker blacks, less noise, and more details. It would be a sizeable upgrade.

Samsung also had a 16-50 f/2-2.8 lens that went along with the NX1. That'd be a nifty little lens to go along with the Pentax PX1... hehehe.

I'm expecting 1200 to 1400 USD myself. But, for that price, it better be phenomenal. That is price range of lightly used D500 today and the price is going down over time. Used K-1 getting cheap.. used D750 if you need something a little more sporty and FF, as are many new mirrorless cameras in the range. The point being there is a lot of high quality options at that price range.

I'm more convinced, in that very last post by jpt, that they very well might 'catch up' to some degree with the next crop body.

If the translation is correct and they are using a new sensor and a new processor as they think the engineer said, then it could be a much more substantial gain than a K-3 III incremental..

And the fact that the engie doesn't want to show a silhouette because it would give away an important aspect to the camera was interesting. No info just speculation from me: it has an EVF or hybrid EVF/OVF in it that is given away by the top hump.

But I am not expecting 153 point edge to edge of frame wowness like the D500, but even D7200 level AF system would be monumental for a Pentax and a huge quality of photography life (haha) upgrade for us. For me, it would be 'good enough' If it reached that level.

I appreciate the fact that the Ricoh employee in charge of the K-3 II replacement even showed they compare their products to the other DSLR manufacturers. Months ago some here claimed Pentax doesn't compete with anyone, they essentially just march to their own drum... hahha. I think that was just to excuse Pentax cameras from not competing on specs. But no, they while they do their own thing, it is within the confines of whatever baseline the market establishes. And the Ricoh engineer in charge of it just admitted as much.

That last Q and A was very informative.

Haha oh.. I didn't mean the engineers, but the Pentax fans that were dreaming the Ricoh had bought out the tech and rights to the NX1 and were going to incorporate it into a new Pentax body. You don't remember those posts?

That said the sensor it used was incredible.. even in low light it looked closer to full frame than crop imo.

Since we have at least 6 months if not closer to 10 we have plenty of time to work the specs up into unachievable dreams.

Where are those Samsung NX1 guys at?

All aboard the hype train!! Consider me hyped. I'm shocked they've admitted the K-3 style body was at the lower end. But, much more exciting, is that they see not only the ground ahead of them but the desire to walk it. Best Pentax news in years imo.

I still am not expecting D500 level.. but it looks like it isn't going to be a clunky KP II at least!!! So happy. Thank you for your time and expertise on translating, JPT.

I suspect that is exactly what happened internally.. you can sell a new body and maybe a new lens to a current crop shooter, OR you can sell them a new body and a whole new lens system. More money in upselling...

..well as long as your customers don't jump ship as a result of those business decisions.

Not to those in the APS-C system it isn't.

They could have just offered the KP sensor and accelerator in the K-3 II body with a tweaked AF and maybe slightly deeper buffer. At the time - 2017, it would have been meager but okay imo. At least the series would have continued...

The Ricoh rep being relieved of no questions on 645 tells me not to hold your breath on that one....
