I drove by and spotted a couple eagles out on the ice, so I crawled as close as I could and began shooting. I never saw the otters, just some black bits behind the eagle. I figured it was a carcass or something, so I payed it no attention (hence the open aperture). I only saw the otters after I zoomed in on a picture. I guess both eagle and otters were after the same thing; fish! Maybe the eagles was trying to steal an easy meal? Or maybe just resting from their own fishing, I don't know. I was surprised the otters dared to stay this close, but they did not seem to mind the eagle at all. Quick little buggers

Too bad with the shallow dof, but I did not see the otters before it was too late. Nice surprise, but I would like to have the opportunity to shoot this again with a smaller aperture :asleep:

Managed to get close to this one after a while.

All these sigma 500 4,5 shots are making me all sorts of jealous! Are you hand holding these, monopod or tripod? I cant stand tripods, and never tried a monopod. But hand held will not alwasy (understatement) get me sharp results like shown here.. My da*300 is not enough^^

Dane dawg that is a wonderful shot. So nice and sharp and 0 motionblur. Care to give me the exif spec, and maybe how you go about sharpening lilke that? Is it a crop, or is there a higher resolution picture somewhere? Again, spectacular shot!

Yes.. as I said in my original post, this promises good in terms of IQ, and also imply WR. ;) The new lens has to be pretty sharp/optically sound for pentax to consider putting a star on it.

Pentax is apparently debating whether to name the new telephoto lens DA or DA*, that at least has to be a good sign in terms of image quality. I also implies that the lens is WR (all da* is) and that it probably has at least SDM (hopefully DC), since no Da* has screw drive.

Ah well.. Now I can only hope that it will destroy the sigma in the price department. Already inferior aperture to the sigma, and I have to doubt it can do much better optically than the sigma. The argument of putting a pentax lens on a pentax body just to "have some legs to stand on against the competition" does not make sense to me if our "legs" are worse than the competition. Who would buy an inferior lens just because it had pentax written on it? I can only assume that this lens will be a lot more affordable than the alternatives.

I am also very curious about if this lens is meant to work with the new TC. A 1,4tc on this lens would give f 7,84, which I guess translates to f8 in camera. Todays TC wont operate properly at those apertures. My own 1,7AF would give +- f10, which is pretty unusable for me, and definitely wont AF correctly/reliable on the K-5.

Even though I am a bit disappointed in the aperture spec, it does not mean I think it will be a bad lens. I am looking forward to the release with great curiosity and anticipation regarding price/IQ/weight etc.

The info did not say anything about the focus motor. Do you think it will be screw drive, sdm or dc?

I guess that would be very nice, however there is also the weight to consider. I agree on your view on the sigma, it seems to be a very nice combination of weight and quality, and the aperture is also pretty decent. I would prefer f4 though, for use with a TC at least. The sigma being such a good option is why I argue that the Pentax would have to beat it somehow, or else whats the point?

About the FA*600, this too is a very high quality lens, but the problem is you cant get one.. This apply for all the pentax lenses above 300mm, and especially the AF ones. I don't see a used and very rare lens to be an option for the masses:)

I cant believe you guys, pentaxians seems to always hope/settle for the mediocre! Why is everyone hoping the new lens will be a cheap f5,6 lens? Come on, we have been waiting on this since forever. Anything else then f4 will just leave us hanging and wishing we could have the nice canikon lenses.. In my opinion this new lens has to beat the sigma 4,5 in every respect or else it will be a disappointment! Cheap/semi decent ways to reach super telephoto we already have a ton of options. High quality fast super-telephoto prime we have 0!. I hope they deliver a quality on par with fa600 f 4, they already have the plans for those so I don't see why they should do any worse.

Da 550 f4 WR DC now THAT would be something to drool over! And by the way, I cant afford it no matter which version they release, but I would like to have the best possible option for when i do (this century hopefully :D )

He he, I must try to scare a bird with slower digestion next time:p And the picture is a crop. I had no intention of capturing poop! Made me laugh when I unloaded my memorycard on the copmuter though. I was in my kayak when I scared it and luckily it flew it's bombing mission in the opposite direction.

It's a Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea). But yeah, they are pretty indistinguishable (but live on different continents).

Ramirot: We demand a PP recipe for that iso 5000 shot! :D It's remarkable clean. I take it you selectively de-noised the background but not the bird? What programs or plugins did you use?

Just tried my new K-5. It's a different world from the k-x, and I can already tell I'll get lots of joy from this camera. I walked around with the 18-135 and the 300, and I must say I got some pretty nice pics from both of them. Especially since I was just walking my dog and firing off a snapshot here and there. Cant wait to use it more:)

My dog thinks photography is boring!. "Come on we got ALL the twigs and bushes to smell, I ain't got all day!!"
He ended the walk early by rolling around in a dead wolfish! The smell was horrid, and I had to bath him twice grr :s

I have a question regarding af speed and the different pentax bodies. Right now I have a k-x and a da*300 (and a da 55-300 +some limiteds). Will I get faster af-speed with the da*300 on a k-5 body, or is it already limited by the usm motor? What about the screw drive da 55-300 and limiteds? The da*300 is really the only lens I would need a faster af on.

Hmm I have the k-x, and from the sample images I have seen, the high iso shots from k-5 is not that much better, if at all. But your picture looks noise free to me. I must have under estimated the k-5. Although I suspect the small size of the image shown here helps. Anyway Good job, I really like that one! What bird is it?

A general question to all of you; when applying noise reduction, do you apply it globally, or do you mask out the bird/subject to retain detail in the plumage etc?

Lenses are usually sharper and give more detail if you stop them down a bit. But then you loose light, and have to crank up iso, which looses detail again. How do you choose? Would you rather shoot wide open, or increase the iso a bit to be able to stop down some?
