And this is another one showing a (sort of) straight neck (as it is about to touch down) as well as a crooked neck (or two, including the egret) -
[F* 300/4.5, I think, cropped only moderately IIRC]

What, to me, is even more interesting is the shape of the neck -- great blue herons (as with other herons and egrets) nearly always have their necks crooked into an S-shape ~except~ sometimes when just starting to take off or sometimes when just about to touch down in landing.
