I'll be posting some soon from my Q. I'm still getting used to it. I haven't done much yet but take pics of bottles and containers and such. Boring stuff to test out using my A110 lenses. I'm taking my Dad to see one of his doctors next week. They have a great parking lot with tons of draped trees and lots of birds and squirrels running around. More importantly even when it's 90 degrees out it's pretty cool, cool enough for me to stay out of direct sun and still have some fun for a few minutes taking pics of things. I'll see if I can't get some shots of some of Otis's little furry friends for you...

My new toy camera the Pentax QS1 is beyond cool. Yeah, I know it's not a point and shoot but this camera is so much fun I think it certainly qualifies as a TOY. Not to mention most of the lenses I have for it are totally toys. Most of them they're smaller than a QUARTER! My whole "Q" kit sans duplicate charger fits into a makeup bag in my purse if I want it to and actually it weighs less than the emergency basic makeup kit I do keep in there.

I believe in being prepared, shrug. As well as the usual actual car emergency kit I also keep a little duffle with some towels, a pair of yoga pants, some slip on shoes, a long t-shirt, a good basic black dress, some sparkly junk jewelry, and some nice shoes in my car. If it rains and I get really soaked I have towels and extra clothes. I can go from shirt and jeans to cocktail party queen in under 20 minutes if I have to and I have upon being invited to dinner or a party or whatever.

I used that outfit not too long ago actually. I went to do a photo shoot for this nice couple and afterwards I got invited to a little cocktail party/BBQ. They let me borrow a shower and some shampoo and that and in no time I was walking around like Audrey Hepburn in my little black dress a faux cocktail in my hand chatting sometimes, but mostly people watching. It was kind of fun and the BBQ was great too. I wish I had had my Q then. I'm sure it would have been quite the popular topic of conversation and given me something to say. I'm rather shy at parties for all I can dress like I belong there. The Q, I think it might have given me more confidence...

I get that too. My erstwhile siblings are relieved that they don't have to deal with Dad but can sound a little jealous too sometimes of the fact that I have a better relationship with him than they do. Even as an adult living away from here I always called my parents regularly. Once we had email there was constant contact the long distance notwithstanding. For years my siblings barely called at all. Don't think that kind of stuff doesn't matter to old people because it really does. My Grandmother she used to live for phone calls and letters and visits. They didn't happen and she would get just heartbroken. My Dad is tougher than she was, but it still bugs him a lot when they don't keep in touch for long periods of time. That I have made an effort to do so really makes a huge difference with him.

Don't get me wrong he can totally get on my case at times, but he's knows I am there for him, that I will be there as long as he needs me and I do get credit for that. I don't really care if my siblings like that. If I am seen as somehow "favored" by him. They're not the ones stepping up. They aren't going to be the ones wiping his arse for him if and when he needs it. I will be and as far as I am concerned they have no right to judge me, ever, and btw, my Dad will totally give them grief when they do. He will tell them to shut the h- up which amuses me because in his mind while he's totally allowed to give me grief they're absolutely not.

When Mom died I can back home, helped my Dad sell the house and deal with her stuff. I was there for a year doing that, cleaning and showing the house. Then I went away for a while again, but later I came back and lived with him again for a while after I was in a serious accident. Again, I totally kept in contact even when I was hundreds of miles away. Coming back that was something he asked me to do because he was worried about me and I left again later for several years once the legal mess was sorted and I'd had surgery and was feeling better. You would not believe the crap my one brother gave me over doing it though. I was nearly incapable of walking at one point but it was not okay for me to move back in with Dad while I healed. That was me "taking advantage of Dad." I'm not going to repeat what I said back then but just an FYI, I seldom speak to that brother even now. The fight we had was monumental and Dad basically threw him out and would hardly talk to him for a long time for going there. Even now there are issues. They talk and they're mostly cordial, but ever since then I think Dad has soured on that brother a bit. He did not like it at all that he went there.

The irony of course is that Dad now lives with me pretty much and I take care of him, and of course they don't object to that! At this point we're renting his place but we're probably going to sell it to the couple renting it soon. Likely I'll sell my place too and we'll find a bigger place to share, a bit farther out into the country here if possible. This town is becoming a city. It's getting congested and the crime rate is way up from what it was a few years ago. It's become so trendy it's getting too expensive to live here besides. The rents here are crazy too. We could be in a house twice this size and pay 3/4 of what we pay in lot rent here.

Dad was really resistant for a while, but I think he's finally coming around now that he has to live with me. This place is really just too small for 2 people. I had a roommate for a long time but she was hardly ever here. I was by myself most of the time so when she was here it wasn't a big deal, but with Dad he's here 24/7 and we definitely need another bath and big bedroom. I can't live in a room the size of a closet. I can't give him that room either, not with his walker and canes and all. We definitely need more space. Likely we will probably need wheelchair access soon besides. It's time to move and I am actively looking for a not too expensive older 3-4 br mobile home somewhere up north of here. It's kind of nice that Dad is finally on board with that. I thought I was going to have to drag him kicking and screaming to someplace new but at this point I think he gets it's necessary. My place is junk. I'll be lucky to get 3K for it but his is worth a bit more and likely we'll just take what we get for them and move soon...

This is my Dad's Twilight time. I don't like living here but he likes it and I'm not going to force him to move cross country at this age. It's enough that he's willing to move to another town nearby finally. But when he's gone I'm out of here. I have no doubt that there will be some pissy conversations when he's gone though. Just dealing with my siblings and the situation lately has been very illuminating. They say they are relieved that I am in charge but what they say and how they act and the questions they ask that's often two different things. I can read people pretty well. I can see that they don't quite trust me and given a choice they would probably just put Dad into a home and my one brother would probably step in and take custody of his affairs. 90% of what I get asked it's all about wills and stuff like that. It's pretty clear that's what they're worried about.

But that's all done properly with a lawyer and all and I have nothing to say about any of it except that I am the executor at the time. I have a clue as to what he's written in there. He's told me and I'm already on his accounts and stuff, but the will is sealed at the lawyers and will remain so until it's needed. I honestly don't care what's in it. It's his decision and whatever his wishes are I will honor it. His being in their custody is not how my Dad wants it or how he has set it up. That's the last thing he'd ever want which is why I am the caretaker and not one of my brothers. My Dad is not as oblivious as they think. He gets more than they think and he can see right through them.

There's a reason my Dad trusts me to take care of him. He CAN. He knows I have his back and that I won't let anything bad happen to him or let him be prematurely put in a home. I will honor his wishes now and after death. My one brother was very put out that he put me in charge I think but I wouldn't trust that brother to watch my cats let alone my Dad. He'd be in a home so fast his head would spin. My Dad seldom praises me to my face but when it comes down to it he does it plenty behind my back which I am sure probably causes some bad feelings with the others sometimes, even as they realize that he has reason to.

No kid likes to think he or she is less important to a parent or grandparent. But when it comes down to it old people they tend to care more about the people who are more intimately involved with them, who don't just ignore them, who take care of them when they need it, and who don't do it in such a way that their dignity is totally lost. I've been there for my Dad, for every emergency for my whole life pretty much. Particularly so for the last two decades or so. I've gone through several strokes with him, gotten him care after bad falls, been through several hospitalizations and literally nursed him through several bad illnesses. That's why we are so close now. We don't always get along, but in the end it doesn't matter. What matters is that I am here. My siblings, even the one who lives here, they rarely visit. Once a year maybe one or two of them will show up and stay for a few hours, that's it. They call some but would probably not if I had not nagged them to do so. Me, I'm here 24/7. Of course I'm the kid that my Dad talks about the most. It doesn't mean he loves them less, but he does I think appreciate me a bit more sometimes and he lets them know it too, unfortunately. :P

I would fight my siblings tooth and nail before I ever let them put my Dad into one of those places. There's a good reason I have his POA. They've mentioned it more than once. They just got the cold, hard stare routine from me, laugh. The only reason I would ever do that is if Dad had Alzheimer's or something like that and did not recognize me at all. If he was dangerous to himself or needed end of life illness type nursing care to a level where I and some outpatient nurses could not handle at home.

My Dad and I have our issues, but there is no way I'd ever let him end up like that if I had any say in the matter. I will take care of him till he is gone, period. If I need help I will get it, but I will never just abandon him to a residential nursing home unless there is absolutely no alternative. It's one thing for him to be there for a few weeks while he's recovering from an illness to get therapy and that. Living there, that's a whole other thing, and he deserves better than that. I've seen old people in those places. A lot of them they just give up and sit around looking vacant, doing nothing, acting like living vegetables. That's not a life. Dad is definitely not like that and I don't want him to get to that point either.

I don't believe in just abandoning the elderly. This whole "me" centric culture that's sprung up it frankly disgusts me. My parents were horrible parents in some way and I'm not one to sugar coat that but they still gave birth to me and did their best in their eyes anyway to raise me. They messed up a lot. There were chemical issues and abuse. For years our relationship was very turbulent as a result. I still have issues with that, therapy notwithstanding, but my Dad is my Dad. He was not a great one sometimes but he's still my father and he's getting way old, and he needs care. He's very dependent on me at this point.

Some of his kids barely talk to him. Not one of them would step up to do my job. They'd just see him put into a home and visit sporadically maybe. They're obviously relieved that they don't have to do my job. But that's not who I am. I can't just abandon my Dad because it's not too convenient sometimes for me to take care of him. I have to live with my own conscience, you know? When he's gone I want to be able to look back and know that I did the right thing. Not fret that I didn't. It might not bother some people, putting their family members in a home, but it sure would bother me. I've always been the caretaker kid. It's not been very good for me at times. I often feel like I've raised my parents instead of the other way around. But my conscience is clear and will be when my Dad is gone.

I have a much closer relationship with my Dad now than I did growing up. Much closer than any of my siblings. I encourage them to contact him, to have one, but I can't help but wonder sometimes if they'll be okay with it mentally when all is said and done. Probably they can be very self centered individuals at times and what bugs me usually doesn't bug them, shrug. I tell you what though, when he is gone? I'm gone. I will do exactly what he wants, in terms of his wishes and his estate such as it is, but after that I'm moving far, far away from the whole lot of them. I will miss my one set of nieces. I am enjoying watching them grow up, and likely we'll stay in touch, but my siblings? Not likely. Minimal contact, and that will be fine by me.

It's true. You can pick your family but you can't pick your relatives. The few close friends I consider family I will never lose track of if I can help it. My actual relatives? I'd just as soon not even live on the same coast, thanks! I've got nothing against my siblings and that but I don't really care for them as people. We're very different people. They're just my Dad's other kids. I call them brother/sister but really there is almost no relationship there at all, even with the one brother that actually lives here. I keep them up to date on Dad because it's the right thing to do, but once he's gone there will be no reason really hardly to stay in contact. I'll rather miss the kids, but not enough to stay within hailing distance of their parents...

But if my relatives had their way? Dad would already be in one of those place....shudder....

At one point I had an S7000 which at that time was Fuji's best upscale P&S. It was a nice camera, very much like a DSLR except you could not change lenses. I could even shoot RAW with it which was unusual in P&S cameras back then. I did have these lenses that fit over the zoom, that supposedly gave you wide and long, but they never really worked well. The camera itself was great and I got some stellar shots with it, but it never did work well for me in low light. It was near useless in a club the one time a pal asked me to take some pics in one. I really ended up regretting that I had no DSLR for that one. Fuji makes good little cams IMHO, darned good compared to some. One thing about my E-P3's that I really, really love is that they have very nice low light capacity and the fastest focus I've ever seen, even in the half dark. Honestly I don't even know if Olympus makes P&S mini cams but if I was going to get one and they did I'd be tempted given how great my E-P3's are. They're doing something right...

Actually I've seen quite a few on KEH. Better prices on that one than Amazon, but still not what I'd call cheap, no. When it comes to Oly I definitely like their M43 cameras and I've heard nothing but praise for the OMD's so I think it might actually be worth it maybe...

Rupert, you should get yourself a M43 body. They can be had cheaply now and they have all the advantages of the little cams but you can change a lens if you want to. Seriously I can carry one in my jacket pocket and I can still be able to change lenses if I want to. Best "tiny kit' combo IMHO is an Olympus E-P3 or E-PL3 or later and the 17mm Olympus lens. I've had actual pocket cams that were bigger and that weighed more and that were nothing beside one of these. You could go Q too, of course but I really like my Oly's when it comes to this.

They have all the programmed settings I actually find handy and it's very comfortable using one. Plus, they have the best macro and low light settings I've ever seen on a little camera, period. Maybe it's that my Oly lenses are mostly primes and very good ones, but sometimes I could swear they outdo my K-30's on that score. The EPL series is smaller, lighter, more like a regular pocket cam than the regular series is. Might suit you better, but I like the E-P series because it's more like a DSLR AND a pocket cam in one. I get more settings I can choose with an E-P3 vs say an E-PL3, but it is a tad heavier if you go with say an E-P3.

The E-PL5 is just out and it would set you back a bit but it's supposed to be nice. You'd probably like one, but anything beyond an E-P3 or E-P3 will have the good sensor and be super quick...

This is the newest with the new version of the kit zoom, which isn't bad for a kit zoom.

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Interchangeable-Digital-Camera-14-42mm/dp/B0096WDMGC

but this is the one I really like....

With the kit....

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Interchangeable-Camera-14-42mm-Silver/dp/B0058...s=olympus+e-p3

With the 17mm. FYI, it's small, like smaller than pancake small, the perfect pocket lens...

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Thirds-Interchangeable-Digital-Camera/dp/B0059...e-p3+with+17mm

They're running a bit more now but I've seen either combo for less than $249 used on Amazon at one time or another and IMHO it's totally worth the buy if you can find one for cheap. Best little "fun" pocket camera I have ever owned, bar none. I'm totally in love with mine. Oh and the E-P3, it has a really good touch screen. You touch it, pick your focus spot and BOOM you're there. I just love that. I don't even hardly need the EVF with that screen...

One of the reasons I like my Oly's so much is that they're really sort of a hybrid between the small P&S cameras and the DSLR's. With my "toy" cameras I get the benefit of the changing lenses but I also get easy macro and other similar toy camera settings. If I put a kit length prime on my EP-3's, put it on auto and flip it to macro I'm right there for taking pics of things like bugs. As much as I love my DSLR's I don't like doing macro with them as much. I have to work too darned hard, shrug. It's one thing if I want to and I have tons of time to fiddle with lenses and tubes et all. It's another if I've got seconds to grab a shot of some bug that's likely not to stay there for very long or that's already moving at a nice clip. Yeah, my K-30's have some toy settings too but I can't really walk around with one in my purse all the time with a macro/telephoto lens on it unless I want to kill my back completely. Even the K-30 can be too heavy for me now sometimes. I save that for work, when I need that kind of camera. My Oly's they fit neatly into my purse and the lenses are small, and I have all the fast settings I need when I need them. With the 17mm I can even put one in my jacket pocket if it's cool enough to wear one. I can't do that with my K-30's. I used to get great animal macro shots with my pocket cams and it was so easy. I kind of missed that using big cameras all the time. The only time I use my K-30's for macro is when I am taking jewelry pics and want to use the mini tripod, light box and all.

Oh, I'm finally taking mine out in public pretty regularly now. A couple of weeks later I'm sure the cement I used is totally dry and I'm no longer afraid the expensive little crystals will go flying. I went around taking some pics of the local Halloween displays for our park newsletter lady and of the practice runs for the buggy and costume parade the elders here like to have. You should have seen them all coo over my fancy little bling cameras. Three of the old ladies in the park want me to bling their P&S's! I said "Nope, sorry." because I had enough trouble doing mine. I literally gave myself a migraine more than once and I had problems with my hands and neck a lot. I could not do this for a living. No way. Too much pain involved and I'm not a masochistic type. I'm taking them to the photo club with me Saturday and probably to yoga. Everybody I hang out with wants to see them. I really need to take some pics for you all too. I'm having a lot of fun with them. :)

If you are going to take a lot of log tele shots or maybe get wet or dirty I'd take the DSLR. That's if you have a WR set up and need a lens longer than 300mm. If you're not then I'd take the M43 cam. Why? Because you can get lens coverage up to 300mm fairly easily with M43 and M43 cameras don't freak "people in charge" out the way DSLR's seem to which leads to far less hassle when it comes to shooting in certain places. Having a M43 cam in hand can be darned handy I've found for travel as people just don't seem to register them as a threat. Security people they just don't take them as seriously as a DSLR and they don't bother you as much about using them. I've had security people give me a lot of trouble about using a DSLR but almost never with a M43 cam. Now mind you I've totally blinged my Oly's up and made them look like fluff cams too, probably that helps some, laugh, but overall I've have to say my DSLR kit gets me more negative attention when I don't want it...

That would be "sister" just an FYI, lol. I honestly don't get why so many people on here use male pronouns when they type back at me. I'd think it would be pretty obvious that "Mag Kelly" is a woman? Also, I would gladly trade here for 40 degrees and upstate NY, absolutely. I love New England in the Fall. How I wish I could just take a train and go away for a week. I've been to upstate NY and Maine for the Summers, but once I went to Newport RI once just in time for all the leaves and it was so crisp and gorgeous the whole time I was there. We had cider fresh from the orchard and it was just amazing, nothing like the stuff in the plastic bottles that they sell here as "fresh." First 10 years I lived where there was a real Fall too. I miss that, all the colored leaves, how cool it gets, the bonfires and Fall festivals. As much as I don't like Summer by contrast I love Fall and Winter...

I just wish it would get cool enough that I could go out and use all my cameras more. I get tired of shooting only clients, dolls, and anything around the house that takes my fancy just to keep myself busy. I want to go to the zoo, visit the nature sanctuaries, the big cat shelter here. But it's all outdoors and I just can't take the high heat. I wish Fall would hurry up and get here. It's flipping the middle of Sept and I still can't hardly stick my nose outside my front door without risking serious heat stroke... :P

I'm sorry, Sue. I hate when I lose a beloved animal. In some ways it's worse than losing a human. That's sad to say I know, but it's true, for me. I have dealt with the death of several human friends. It hurts like heck but I can deal, and I will do what I've got to do, carry on, but losing one of my cats? It just really makes me want to curl up and die myself for a while. When I was a kid my Grandmother told me once that her church said that cats don't go to the afterlife because they don't have souls. She didn't buy that herself, but me, I told her point blank that if there was such a thing as a heaven that all my animals had better all be waiting there for me when I died. If they weren't I definitely wasn't going to be staying! I darn well meant it too. There are human friends I'd love to see again, but my cats? They're the first beings I want to see there post death save the angel sent to take me home. I can't even imagine an afterlife without them. Even seeing "God" her/himself, could just bloody well wait till I see my kits again, smile.

I got my white P3 today. I haven't had much time to play with it but it's here. I was surprised to realize it wasn't just white though. It's actually got a pearlized finish and is a rather nice looking little M43 camera. With the 17mm on it neatly fits into the pocket of my favorite jacket. Handy that, grin. Throw a couple of batteries and my little long zoom in the other pocket and I don't even need to take a purse along. I read the reviews on the 17mm and figured it wouldn't do much and might be worth selling? Actually this copy is pretty darned nice from what I can tell. I don't see a lot of the "flaws" that the reviews I've read seem to. Methinks a lot of them are just being a bit too picky. This is a lovely little pancake walk around lens and I like it. :)

Confessions of a Toy Camera Shooter....Confess Here!

Mounting huge zooms on M43 cameras is kind of silly I think. The whole point is they're supposed to be small, almost pocket cams, and they're supposed to have little lenses. My biggest lens for my M43 set is actually pretty small. It's a little less big than a 100mm prime on a DSLR and gets me to the equivalent of a 300mm roughly, so "huge" isn't actually all that big with M43. My kit lens a Sigma 19mm is a little bigger than a pancake. The whole M43 kit is actually a lot smaller than my DSLR and lenses, even though I shoot a Pentax which is smaller than most DSLR's.

The only time my M43 set up tends to get a little ungainly is when I'm using adapters and trying to use my 28/50-55/100mm primes on one. The extra length of an adapter is annoying to me I will admit, but even with that it's still smaller than my DSLR, and a lot lighter to tote which is one of the reasons I got mine. It's hard to tote a DSLR in your purse all the time, but I can throw my little Oly and it's 2 AF lenses in my purse and not even feel it. I do like the option of swapping lenses but I don't consider M43 cameras "serious" cameras. They're fine for snapshots or even for a few quick head shots in a pinch, but when I really want to get serious I still grab a DSLR.

My M43 camera is in no way comparable to my K-30. To me it's the equivalent of a good P&S in my purse, but I can actually change out lenses, which is nice. It is a toy and while it's a cool little toy, it's just not good enough for serious business, at least my E-PL1 isn't. I'll have to let you know about the E-P3. That's a serious upgrade I'm told but it's not here yet so I can't actually comment on that. I'm looking forward to it actually, seeing if it is that much better...

My idea of a toy camera lately is as you know a M43 camera. (None of this not changing lenses at all stuff!) When it comes to M43 cameras I'm an Oly fan. I have an Oly E-PL1/Sigma 19mm/Oly 40-150 kit that I've been using for a little while. It's a cool little camera but it's kind of slow. My teacher out on the west coast, his wife, she has a couple of E-P3's and she's about to upgrade one to an E-P5. Guess who is getting one of her old "toy cameras?" Yup, my teacher decided to send one my way. I have a choice of black or silver. I have to give him a call tomorrow and tell him which one I want. It's a major upgrade from the E-PL1 I'm told, much better AF. :)

Oh gad, that looks SO yummy. I'm envious. I haven't had venison sausage in a long, long time, and I really like it.

I'm actually down to just using my "toy" cam for now. My K-x is officially dead as if last week. Yup, I killed it. :P It's a bookend now up on the shelf with my old *ist DL. Work has been killer slow and with my Dad being sick I've not had time to work much anyhow so I'm not exactly rushing to buy. It can wait till Fall, shrug. I've got the room on my credit card now though for a new DSLR body for $600 or under. I could grab a quick K-30/K-50 body but I am holding out for the K5II and the 18-135 WR, I think. End of Summer I'll have the rest of my card paid off. More $$$ to play with and I will likely grab that kit then. I've been monitoring it closely. That kit has been running like $950 or so now new. So it will be firmly in the budget come Sept.

Don't laugh but I actually did a quick head shot shoot with my niece's *ist and my little Oly and believe it or not it went just fine. My little Oly is almost as good as a DSLR. It really is. I'm glad I've got it. Having it really saved my arse when that job came up. I hardly used the *ist actually. I took it out more for show than not. I don't know that I'd attempt a really big shoot with it, but it's nearly as good as my K-x was. I was very tempted for a sec there just to get a used EPL-3 body and call it a day for a while but people usually do expect a "proper" DSLR when they hire you so I didn't. I think I am becoming a major Oly Pen fan though. I still want another Pentax DSLR but I must admit I like my M43 cam a lot now that I have a couple of good digital lenses, a VF and all...
