Impressive shots! Did you have to wait for a night with good astronomical seeing, or was your shutter speed fast enough that it didn't matter?

BTW, getting an F* 300/4.5 showing up next week. Looking forward to joining the club!

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions! There doesn't seem to be a multi-quote option anymore (at least in mobile mode) so apologies for the joint response.

Glad to hear the F/FA* has a good reputation, I followed up on the one in the marketplace. As for the DA*, it's a good option too, especially for the weather sealing, but I'm a sucker for older glass. I tend to manual focus most of the time, and I like the simplicity of screw drive AF (even if it's loud or slower).

I hear you on Sigmas focus direction being 'wrong', that can drive me nuts too! At least Tokina and Voigtlander have it 'right'. ;)

I do have a Pentax-A 400/5.6 currently, so I'm set out that far. It works well enough, but it's too big for my camera bag, so it usually is always on the camera or not with me at all.

Going the other way, I know this is on the short side, but do any of you use the Pentax-A* 200/4 macro with a TC? That might be a good combo...

Do you guys have any recommendations for a handheld tele prime to pair with my K-1? I'm thinking ~300mm and ~F/4. I've got some bigger 100-300mm lenses, but I'd really like something easier to carry around. I'm currently thinking either a F* 300/4.5, Voigtlander 180/4 or one of the APO Sigmas. I'd primarily be using it for wildlife, landscapes, and astrophotography. Cheers in advance!

Very cool! How did you block enough light to take this?

I think @GeneV might own one and he's in town - what do you say?

Nice series! Good job locking focus.

I just purchased a fellow forum member's A400/5.6. It'll be my wildlife glass for Alaska this June. Looking forward to "joining the club".

Nice! Did you use the K-3ii pixel shift for that?

Hey guys - I'm in the market for a good 300+ lens on a budget (~$300), and looking for suggestions. I've narrowed it down so far to:

Takumar 300/4 Type 2 Preset
Pentax-K 300/4
Pentax-FA 300/4.5 (this one is pushing the budget)
Pentax-A 400/5.6

Any recommendations in that list or elsewhere for ~$300? Also, has anyone tested how the DA 55-300 stacks up to these older designs? Are the old primes even worth it comparatively (in rendering not build)?
