Rabbit. Taken this morning, I was actually hoping a pair of Roadrunners would show up. got a rabbit instead.

IMGP73278 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

First picture was very close, 15 feet or so, he figured out what the clicking noise was and tried to hide in the bushes.

IMGP73281 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

Squirrel also let me get fairly close before he realized I was there. While he was undecided what to do I got a few shots.

Nature's garbage disposal unit...the Black Vulture. Several in a neighborhood on town, I guess they see people all the time, they never let me get this close. This one just stood there and watched, 3 others moved a few feet away.

This is a first for me, a Yellow Throated Vireo. Uncommon bird, according to my books, only saw this one for a few minutes.

IMGP72542 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

Another first, Spotted Sandpiper. Not easy to ID sandpipers, but this one is pretty distinct, bobs its head up and down constantly, the whole body pivots along with it. First time I've seen one, it's landed on the bank of the lake several times, this was the only time I was close enough for a shot or three.

IMGP72504 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

FAwn. Two of these in a field on the way to band practice a few days ago. After a minute or so they decided I might be a threat and ran off.

Green Heron I spotted in the lake a few days ago. Two in this tree, let me get closer then these birds ever do. Just sat there and watched me...

Yep, saw two and both were fairly lean, I'm thinking young ones not quite fully grown and maybe having a hard time finding groceries. I'm pretty sure they have been through the yard at night, I've been finding droppings.

One of the two a couple of days later. I saw both this time but only got a good shot of this one, it barked twice at me and left just after I got this picture.

Red Fox. The next day I spotted two in this same spot, didn't get any good shots though. This is about 30 yards from my front door. I'll be watcing, need to find a spot and sit there and wait...

Deer on the way back from a friend's house.. Two there, other one hiding in the brush and didn't get a good shot.

Squirrel I may have posted already, not sure...

IMGP69064 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

Close in crop of an Alligator Snapping Turtle. Shell about a foot long, I found it wandering across our front yard, probably looking for a place to lay eggs. Not a critter to fool with, that mouth is very quick and can take off a finger...

Caught this guy by surprise, usually the only way I get this close, 15 feet away...

Otter showed up again this morning, that's 3 days in a row, same spot and around the same time. Today one showed up about 20 feet from where I got the pictures in this post, which is the same spot as the pictures in the last post. Guess I need to start naming these guys...but now I know where to sit to get some good shots, now if the sun will just come out now and then...overcast at ISO800 is not my favorite pastime, especially at 28° with a 20MPH wind going...

These are from yesterday ISO400 The spot is about 4 feet from where the previous post was shot but I was in a different location.

Otter. I've seen several on the lake, first time I've gotten a decent up close shot. Every shot of this one it seems it has a milky right eye, I think that eye is probably blind.

IMGP63782 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

IMGP63775 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

Got a couple more today of a different one but in the exact same spot, both came within 20 feet of me, the first one was about 10-12 feet away...

Oops, don't have the new shots uploaded yet...

Posted a couple of these in POTW...

We have a place here where a local resident has a large piece of acreage with several interesting critters...buffalo, elk, fallow deer, and I spotted this fawn grazing with 2 does a couple of days ago, about 40 - 50 yards away with a 135mm Makinon. These are White Tailed Deer, native to this area and common.

I also met the owner, and now have permission to go in and take some pictures...might just get some cool shots in the future.

Squirrel let me get really close with the Makinon 135mm, about 15 feet or so. Not quite as sharp as I like but pretty decent.

I've only seen them a couple of times before, this was the first time I happened to have a camera handy. First one I saw was before I got into photography, next one was too far away and tried but didn't get anything recognizable...Don't know what it was about that spot, but I got well out of focus shots of several animals there. Deer, fox, coyote, wild cat that may or may not have been bobcat...but loads of good bird shots and flower and insect macros...go figure...

Tom - I think you goofed. That last shot is another of a White Throated Sparrow...

I think this one is a Chipping Sparrow but not positive. Hard to get a good ID on a lot of the sparrows. I have this one and the White Throated on my feeder every day, cool little birds. They spend more time on the ground than the feeder though.

Forgot about this thread when I got these, spotted some Bobcats not long ago when at the lake looking for Woodducks.

They were originally chasing a squirrel but I'm pretty sure they'd like this guy too...

pearsaab - Thanks.

I don't think that's a snapper either, what I can see of the nose doesn't look quite right and snappers over a few inches across usually have 3 rows of humps on their backs. Nose is longer and more pointed.

Don't know what turtle it is, but not a snapper...

Alligator Snapping Turtles, Alligator Snapping Turtle Pictures, Alligator Snapping Turtle Facts - National Geographic

I had a close friend in Louisiana who raised them, had to get a license and all that jazz, if I were still in touch she could probably ID it. It's also not a Red Ear Slider, probably the most common fresh water turtle of them all. No red & green markings on the head. Not a soft shelled either, shell is leathery and much flatter...and lighter color...My friend once had an alligator snapper around 16 to 20 inches across, she let her go back into the bayou right behind her house. And a few months later found out from a buyer she met online that if she had kept it, that turtle was worth over $2000

I'm very familiar with them, whenever she went out of town I was the one who went over and fed them and changed out the water...Loads of fun, snappers can take off a finger way quick...as slow as those guys usually move, you'd be amazed how fast they can pop that head out and grab a bite of anything that moves...and forget about the myth that if you grab them by their back legs they can't reach around and bite you. Their necks are long enough you can only handle them by the tip of the tail and you're still taking your chances...she had several a foot across...

Colorado - The first is a Hawk, Cooper's Hawk I think but not positive, the second is baby Scissor Tailed Flycatchers, (mom was scolding me from about 15 feet away) and third is a Summer Tanager (although you didn't ask..)

Cool owl shots. I've only had one chance, think it was a Great Horned Owl but not positive. I was about to turn around in the road to go talk to a friend who had just driven by, halfway across the road an owl flew in front of me, landed in a tree 20 feet away, I stopped diagonally across both lanes and grabbed the K-x, before I could focus it flew away...You don't wanna know what I said...

Anyway here's a couple of new shots with the K 30. I recently moved to east Texas, and we had 5 dead pine trees cut down. I took one of the logs (the tree guy cut it up into chunks small enough we could move around to burn it) and set it up for a bird feeder. Here are a couple of my visitors the past couple of weeks. I can sit on a stool within 15 feet and they will still come to the feeder, I'm getting some pretty good shots. Cardinals, Tufted Titmouse, Chickadee, Pine Siskin, Goldfinch, Inca Dove, sparrows...

Taken with K 30 and Vivitar 200mm M42, I've recently gotten close enough to switch to the Lentar 135mm M42, and hopefully can get closer still and switch to a nifty fifty later on.

Female Cardinal, cross posted in "I Spy"

Carolina Chickadee

Chickadees are not easy to get, they grab a sunflower seed (always) and fly away, usually on the feeder no more than 3 or 4 seconds. Tufted Titmouse does the same thing, while most of the others will stick around for a few minutes, like the Cardinals. Female Cardinals are not easy either, it seems a male flies to the feeder soon as one shows up and she flies away. So I usually don't have long to get shots of female Cardinals either. This one happened to be able to stay for a minute, I got a half dozen shots.
