I guess it's about time to post a couple of newer shots in this thread, haven't done it in a while.
A few I'm kinda pleased with...
Black Vulture. They never let me this close, this one was in a residential neighborhood where I guess they see people a lot, sat there and watched me. IMGP72977 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr
Frog that decided to set up housekeeping in my bird box. Macro taken with Makinon 135mm and 55mm extension tubes, flash used. IMGP73130 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr
Prothonotary Warbler, the previous resident in the same nesting box. IMGP70343 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr
Another macro, same rig, not as sharp as I might like but how often do you get a bee flying with a macro rig at all...no flash, natural sunlight. IMGP72425 by Paleo Pete, on Flickr

Tony - Sit there and watch. It takes a while for them to get used to it, but they will finally decide to come eat. I sit about 10 to 12 feet from my feeder. The Tufted Titmouse, Chickadee, sparrows and Cardinals didn't take long but the Bluejays and Red Bellied Woodpecker didn't come close for 2 weeks or more. But once they see you (and they will) for a while they should gradually get the idea you're not looking for lunch. Don't move around a lot, no sudden moves, and don't lick your lips. They think that means you're hungry.
Have a place nearby with some shrubs and trees they can scoot to and hide, and a bird bath not far away helps too. Most birds prefer sunflower seeds, the bird seed I get is the one with the most sunflower seeds and I have plenty visitors.

Tony - These are pretty skittish too, I have to sit there and wait for a while. They seem to be getting more comfortable with me though, and visit more often lately. That feeder is only 10-12 feet away, and that's closer than a Bluejay will ever let me got in the wild, or a woodpecker of any sort. The Woodpeckers are even harder to get, I have to be already looking through the viewfinder or just over it or they fly away instantly when I move. So I have to sit there and watch for them, camera ready, same for the Bluejays but the jays are a little less picky about me moving once they land.
Oh yeah, if you look at my Flickr page (it's in my signature) I have a bunch more there, and plenty that have never been posted.

I guess maybe it's time to post another shot or two here...
foggy morning a few days ago with a lot of mist, Bluejay landed on my feeder for a few minutes. Had to use flash, not enough light without it..
The lake an hour earlier
Red Bellied Woodpecker ( male ) a week or so ago
The female a month ago or more |

OK more cold weather shots. Sorry but that's all I could get that day...
Blue Jay on my bird feeder, snowflake on his head and sleet falling in the background
Mailboxes around the corner
Red Bellied Woodpecker. More sleet falling, and on his head and beak, sitting in snow... yeah I was miserable... |

Some that have ended up in the recent POTW threads. I set up an Oak log for a bird feeder, most of the regular visitors will let me get really close, these are with a Makinon 135mm at around 12-14 feet. |

I find my shots always look softer after uploading here, or flickr if I link them here. Not sure why, but it happens every time.
Got a couple of new ones...
Mexican Hat
Flower taken at f1.4 with an older Pentax 50mm f1.4 (K series I think, 52mm filter ring instead of the usual 49mm)
Not as sharp as I would like to begin with, which is why I never shoot wide open. The Mexican Hat was the same lens at f4.
Bob White, also called Quail. Taken with my trusty Vivitar 200mm M42, from about a foot from minimum focusing distance, around 9 feet. THis bird let me get within 10 feet...ISO 100, flash used, I'm pretty pleased with the shots I got. Quail are very uncommon, between loss of habitat and fire ants they have been almost wiped out. (Ants get the little ones soon as they hatch). A neighbor tried to raise some in pens and a few got out, so it looks like we might have a couple of half wild ones now. I heard two males calling yesterday (this is a male, the female has yellow face markings) and called to them for 20 minutes. Had them answering me, but they never came into view. I knew where this one would be so I sat there and waited this morning... |

Photo Heron - Thanks
New Englander - All taken with a K 30, and Vivitar 200mm M42 lens usually at f8. About 90% of the time I shoot ISO 200, occasionally ISO 400 if it's early AM and low light. These were all ISO 400, shutter speeds 1500 and 2000. These are posted in my gallery, EXIF is there. Or the parts that matter anyway...

Thanks Tom and tclausen. I'm pretty pleased with the Bluebird in flight shots, I got several decent ones. Nothing good enough to sell, which is my main goal, but still pretty decent. And definitely not easy to get. I tried dozens of times. To get these I sat in my Jeep parked about 15-20 feet away and waited. I knew they would be in and out of the box. I originally built the box for Bluebirds, and Chickadees took it over...the Bluebirds still fought over it for a couple of weeks and apparently gave up because the Chickadees raised little ones eventually.
I've always noticed uploads are a bit soft, not sure why but it's irritating. These are definitely sharper than they look here...
Here are a couple more of the Bluebird in flight shots, taken around the same time at the same Bluebird box. Nothing great, but still decent enpough I'm not against showing them off a bit.

Some cool shots here. I haven't been online in a while and haven't posted anything at all, so I thought I'd drop a few newer K 30 shots in.
It's always irritating that these don't look as sharp after uploading as they do on my computer...These are good at 100% on my machine, but look soft after uploading...I was especially pleased some of my recent in flight shots, especially with these small birds...

Impressive camera, oly had it a couple of days, still getting familiar with it.
Blue flower is a Speedwell, a bit under 1/2 inch across, taken with SMC Pentax A 50mm f1.4 and 26mm extension tube made from a teleconvertor with glass removed. Others taken with my trusty Vivitar 200mm M42 lens at f8, ISO 100, sparrow ISO 200 and a bit overexposed. All straight off the camera, no editing other than crop and resize.
