Yeah, you're right. Of course he may not have known about the 645n and the other truly excellent Pentax medium format offerings. The expense of Pentax's medium format lenses should have caught his attention!

Went to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens Monday with the grandkids. Saw NO Pentaxes, indeed only a few "real" cameras! Asked one shooter what was the lens on his camera - huge bulbous front element - and was "treated" to a paean to Canon. He said he had $8,000 in Canon gear! And that he'd traded his PENTAX gear for Canon because Pentax lenses weren't good enough, citing the less expensive Pentax optics. My K5 wasn't readily visible, since it was on my Black Rapid shoulder strap. He asked what I was shooting and I said Pentax K5 and he said that he'd liked the body, but not the lenses. I mentioned to him that the AsahiFlex predated Canon SLRs by many years, and that I had the Pentax f1.2 50mm, among many others. I didn't have the heart to mention to him my 645n kit, which includes the fabulous 35mm, and the 120mm macro. The f1.2 50 did impress him, but I bade him "good shooting," feeling that he had, or had had  more money than sense.

I'd believe that! Some years ago I shot a fireworks display in Charleston WV over the Kanawha River with my LX using, IIRC a 19mm Vivitar lens. With the LX on a tripod and a cable release I wasted a frame or two to set the aperture to keep shutter open long enough to record the totality of the displays, and just sat back and let the camera do its thing. The results were really good! A tribute to the wonder of the mighty LX.

Re: the lens shade. I've had Canikon owners, kids generally, ask me what the funny thing on my len was! They were referring to the petal lens hood. As far as not using a strap of SOME sort: Everyone drops a camera at some point. My "bad" was many years ago, and somehow the camera survived. I favor the BlackRapid type, no need to worry about the camera strap slipping off the shoulder.

If he'd had a KX for about 40 years it was part of the rollout of the bayonet mount Pentaxes, which also included the K 1000. I have one of those old KXs, it is a wonderful camera. All metal, TTL center weighted metering, depth of field preview, mirror lockup, all exposure data visible in the finder. About all it lacks are exchangeable screens and a winder. I scored mine in excellent condition with a 50mm f1.4 lens for about $130, less than the inferior K 1000 often goes for. Look for a ME-Super. They're generally available at low prices on the used market. KEH is a generally good source. The winder is also very nice to have, and usually cheap.

While visiting with my Sister and Brother at her home in Arlington, VA we took in a portion of the Rally/March for Science at the Washington Mall this past Saturday. I saw many, DSLRs, but as far as I could tell, NOT ONE PENTAX!! Surely science mavens would naturally migrate to Pentax, as it furnishes the best return on investment to be had.....

We visited the High Museum here in Atlanta today, to see the - sadly too small - exhibit of iconic photos from the Civil Rights era. Good stuff! Not many visitors, perhaps because of a March Madness game, and the March today. I decided to exercise my LX with its 50 mm f 1.2 and winder. That big hunk 'o' metal and glass should have aroused attention from any CAMERA folks around, but all to be seen were cell phones! Alas!

Our meal at Table 1280 did somewhat ease the hurt. Yumm!

I'll have to check with our kids and their pix of our grandchildren. As far as I've seen cell phone pix are the preference, although Curtis uses an Olympus point and shoot for dismal, stilted pix. He seems to feel that he must not "waste" a shot! I don't know about backup, cloud if we're lucky. I am the defacto chronicler of the families, when I'm around. And yes, I do have proper a backup regimen for digital stuff; film is properly stored after being scanned to Lightroom for cataloging purposes.

I think I still have the negatives and color slides my Father shot back in the day, but scanning them into Lightroom for cataloging purposes is a huge job, not to mention the hundreds of shots I took back in the day.

In my customary photo forays where other shooters are likely to be seen, real DSLRs are vanishingly rare. Cell phones seem to rule the turf, along with the occasional point and shoot. Along with the Atlanta Zoo and the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, one of my favorite venues is the High Museum. The High mounts many excellent exhibits, for example, Henri Cartier Bresson, Salvador Dali, "dream" automobiles, and others. Photography in the museum is permitted, except of those exhibits on loan which forbid it. I wonder if copyright considerations inspire those exhibits which prohibit photography .An interesting recent tendency is that some of the visiting exhibits allow cell phone photography but forbid DSLRs. I have no idea why.

I wonder how many cell phone shooters have made any provision for preservation of their images? Do they down load images to a computer? Does that computer have a backup regimen in place? A typical family treasure is the iconic shoe box full of photos; perhaps even labeled on the back. With extreme luck the corresponding negatives have been saved. What sort of electronic shoe boxes are today's families bequeathing to the future?

Flora and I visit the Atlanta Zoo fairly often with the grand kids. On recent visits I've rarely seen "real" cameras, let alone Pentax. Most folks are using cell phone cameras, the rare DSLRs are almost all Canikons of various sorts.

I haven't seen a Pentax in ..... almost forever! We're leaving Monday for a week in a cabin at Fort Mountain State Park near Chatsworth, GA. While there we'll hike, take pictures, and enjoy nearby Chattanooga, a really pleasant city. I plan to take, in addition to my K 5 kit, my mighty LX with winder and the Intimadator - the 50mm f 1.2. Yes, indeedy! The LX should be fun for street shooting, and might get some comments.

I didn't mean to start an argument, but it seems to me that one should come somewhat prepared for an event at which photos might be desired. I can see using a cell phone, since it is compact and can even be used for a telephone. But a tablet? Rather large to lug around, and I suspect that owners of such probably have a cell phone.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have occasionally used a cell phone when I'd left my real camera home. Case in point, last week we went to a lecture at the Atlanta History Center. Before the lecture we went to a barbecue "joint" (in midtown Atlanta? Really good "que," btw) In the parking lot we saw a fruiting body of a fungus or mushroom which must have been 8 or 10 inches across, and looked like a pecan pie! So I used my cell to take a picture, which I will send to the Georgia Mushroom Club, of which we are members.

We went to the Atlanta Zoo's "Boo at the Zoo" event Sunday morning. The place was mobbed! Several adult Storm Troopers were there, along with Obi Wan Kenobe, any number of young dinosaurs, etc. I saw at least one Ghost Buster, a male of the species. Many cameras, the ubiquitous Canikons - most without lens hoods, or with hoods reversed, some bridge cameras, and of course one gazillion cell phones. Even the occasional tablet shooter. I can't imagine lugging that huge thing around to take a picture!

No Pentaxes to be seen. No big surprise.

Flora and I visited the High Museum in Atlanta to see again the Walker Evans exhibit. A major showing, and well mounted. As on our first visit I carried and used my new to me Nikon S2. On the first visit someone asked me if it were a mirrorless camera! Of course it is, but I resisted, and explained that it was an iconic film camera. Another visitor expressed admiration for its beauty. A person of exquisite taste! Few real cameras, other than the usual low-end Canikons, and of course the scrum of cell phones and tablets.

Second visit: No real cameras to be seen. The museum "guard" was really knowledgeable about the exhibit and had been or was a photographer himself. A few black blobs on neck straps sighted in the middle distance. At the 1280 Restaurant, part of the High, the maitre d' chatted and asked what my Gossen light meter was; he did recognizer the S2 as a camera. A pleasant sort, he didn't realize that one could still buy film! Since he was a movie fan I wish I'd thought to tell him that several directors - Quentin Tarantino comes to mind - use film preferentially, and that cine film is a significant income stream for The Great Yellow Father.

And so it goes...to quote Kurt Vonnegut.

In fairness to the CaNikon beginner crowd, I don't think that Canon or Nikon furnish hoods with their lower tier cameras. More fool they!

Flora and I visited the High Museum in Atlanta to see the Walker Evans exhibit. It is well worth the visit; the High is also building their photography collection. I took my new-to-me Nikon S2; it seemed appropriate. During our visit I didn't see ANY "real" cameras, only dozens of cell phones and a few tablets. Two people commented on the Nikon: one guy asked if it were a mirror less camera, he seemed disappointed that it was only an old film camera. A woman asked about it, I don't think she was a photographer but she did recognize class when she saw it. (The camera, not me!) Alas and alack! I would have welcomed an encounter with a Nikon DSLR shooter....

I went to my niece's wedding on Saturday. The usual scrum of cell-phone shooters were there, the pro was a pleasant young woman shooting a Canon with an enormous 70-200 f 2.8 zoom, and I held forth with my K-5. The only other "real" cameras were low-end Nikon DSLRs wielded by two young kids, and a young fellow shooting with a K 50 and the 35mm f2.4. We chatted briefly; he'd chosen Pentax because it offered, in his judgement, the best feature-set at its price point. Wise fellow! :)

If I want to make a call, I don't use my K-5! I use my Samsung 5. If I want to take a picture, I don't use my Samsung 5! I use my Pentax K-5. Choose the right tool for the job. Smartphones can take a pictorial note, but for the REAL thing, use a camera.

Well, to my knowledge there were at least two different styles of mechanical cable releases. Most film cameras used one with a tapered male thread which screwed into the shutter release button or plunger. Leica, my Nikon S2 and my old AsahiFlex IIa, and perhaps others, used a sort of a internally threaded cup which screwed to the base of the shutter release after you removed a trim collar - which usually got lost! What were they thinking!

And why aren't electronic releases standardized? Probably why PTTL protocols aren't standardized. To boost sales! Or am I being cynical and not properly reverential about the workings of the "free" market....

T's with pockets...I'm wearing one right now! Love 'em!

Now...on to the major question! Why can't a digital camera use the traditional cable release in addition to the electronic or electrical release? My 645n can use either kind! Why not my K 5? Inquiring minds want to know.....

We went to Gibbs Gardens, a wonderful botanical garden in near Ball Ground, GA, about 45 minutes North of Atlanta. Wonderful place, 340 + acres of plantings, with a huge Japanese garden. Excellent weather! Many people shooting, the usual scrum of cell phones, CaNikons everywhere. I saw one Olympus, one Sony, and NO Pentaxes. BTY, what is the proper spelling of Pentax plural? Pentaxes, Pentaxices .... Any thoughts out there??

Spent a day and a half at Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. It is a great experience, properly restored buildings, period furniture or exacting reproductions, well-versed guides and docents in period costume. Saw NO Pentaxes, only a few CaNikons, but the usual scrum of cell phones, I Pads, and whatever.
