Yes, my stepson tells me these things. He also complains about how expensive other things are, like car parts.

Everything that is consumed that isn’t produced there has to be brought over by ship or airplane.

That must have been a delightful holiday Walter.

Mrs. Racer's son lives on that island, near Pahoa. I haven't been to visit yet, but plan to, and of course I will plan at least one trip to the top of Mauna Kea.

Although the law would be best served if enforced universally and to anyone and everyone who met the criteria, it most likely was enforced at the officer's discretion. Initially the ordinance was only posted on Colby Avenue, the main street through the downtown area. This pushed the cruising activities to another boulevard outside of the downtown area, Evergreen Way. So after the crowds had become established on Evergreen Way, the city council extended the coverage to that street.

So then the cruisers would simply park in parking lots of businesses, most of which are closed evenings. But that too became problematic with litter and vandalism, so gates were erected to keep cruisers from utilizing the empty lots to hang out.

It has been many years since cruising was a regular thing, 20 or 25 at least.

Thanks for the comments Hans. Interesting regarding the organized car activities at an inner city neighborhood to try and redirect the youth towards more productive pursuits.

Here the cruising became such a problem with the community that the city passed an ordinance making it illegal to pass the same spot twice or more in an hour, violators would be arrested, spend the night in jail, fined $1,000 and their car would be impounded.

That put an end to the weekend cruising activities.

Some former cruisers organized an annual cruise night some years back, and sold the idea to the city council. It has become an annual event now.

More Colby Cruise Night. Check out the diversity, a street rod, a Rolls, a Riviera, a Duster, a Camaro, a Cadillac, a 56 Chevy . . . . .

The street scene at the annual Colby Cruise Night in Everett, Washington last summer.

These cops were a block or two up the street watching the burnouts happen, and when the drivers passed by them they were invited to leave.

That's Racer thank you.

I've seen this too, in a number of places around the desert southwest, although I don't recall precisely where. I covered 800,000 miles in 5 years, so there is a lot of stuff I've seen and forgotten.

The power lines aren’t visible in your shot Paul. Forgive my correction, but having worked for an electric utility for 30 years it is a bad habit I picked up.

The lowest wires are telephone, the cable just above it with the loop is fiber optic. The power lines are always at the top, for obvious reasons. When you see a pole with electric lines, and telco/cable TV, the pole is owned by the electric utility, and the communications companies lease the lower space from the electric utility, in what is called a joint pole agreement.

The pole is a power, or utility pole, and only called a “telephone pole” when there is no electric lines carried on it.

Still an eyesore.

Oh, and the loop in the fiber cable is because cutting and terminating fiber optic cable in the field is more costly than looping it to fit the span between termination boxes. There should be another loop, a bit further down that returns the cable to the box it was headed to.

My mother is 86. She was born into a poor farming family in rural Nebraska, lived in a sod house on the prairie with her parents, two brothers and two sisters. No electricity, no indoor plumbing.

She has seen the changes from horses outnumbering cars to cars outnumbering horses. Telephone evolution from a device that required connection through the operator in town to the smartphone of today. Her family didn’t get a television until they moved to Southern California. Her father went from using and riding horses to driving early Fords and operating tractors and farm equipment, later running heavy equipment for the Los Angeles sanitation department. He also worked a short time for Douglas Aircraft.

My great grandmother never had indoor plumbing, save for a hand pump in the kitchen just before she passed away. She had a two holer in the garden.

I have seen the telephone and television evolutions, and the changes in transportation.

The way people communicate and interact has changed dramatically in the last hundred years, more so in the last fifty.

I made that exposure in 2015, nearly seven years ago. Time marches on, eh?

And I too miss the button on the floor.

And 2-55 air conditioning.
