My first bonsai, last year. Bonsai by Racer, on Flickr
This spring I finally moved it to a proper bonsai planter. It appears to have died. I may have been to careless with the root pruning. It was four years old last year and was doing very well.
*sigh*

Thanks for the comment Walt.
It was difficult to get a decent shot, a the dunes were quite busy that morning. Add to that the myriad footprints of the human trespassers on the otherwise pristine desert floor, and my reluctance to venture too far into the desert for a better opportunity.
But yes, I was quite satisfied with the result.

They look like conifers, but the one on the left is quite unusual, having huge needles.

I have shot many trees on and around my riverfront property over the years, some multiple times. Like this one, first shot on Christmas day 11 years ago: Snow On The Stilly by Racer, on Flickr

Remember the canvas water bags people hung in front of the grille on their cars while driving across the deserts? I sort of reminds me of those.
Or one of those fabric bags we hung across the door of the barn where the cows walked in and out, that dusted them against fleas.

A couple I know who have been very longtime friends have a maple tree in their yard that has several different varieties of Japanese Maple growing from a common root and trunk. It is quite old, and drops copious seeds every year. They have started numerous seedlings and gave me one last year.
When leaves first emerge, this tree has bright green leaves with red around the edges. As they mature the red edges go away.
This is the end of the first full year in a starter pot. I placed it on one of my upstairs porches, to nurse it and help it get going. Part way through the summer I decided I might try to make a Bonsai from it. I've been reading quite a bit about the art and practice of Bonsai, and I might just pull it off. It is just becoming root bound, so come spring I will re-pot it and begin the journey of Bonsai.
We will see.
Oh, and the tree had a second spurt of growth in late August, sending out a long spike (about 8" long), and adding branch buds just about everywhere.
