We have a new tree in the garden this year, replacing the pink dogwood that died. The new tree is a Japanese maple, with coral colored bark. I'm letting it get established this season, and will begin to shape and train it next year.

The color of the bark is stunning in contrast to the leaf colors, especially in late afternoon sun.

Jupiter bokeh balls.

Rum balls bokeh.

Frosty and his boys performing their latest number, Rum Balls.

Rum Balls by Racer, on Flickr

Frosty and the Reindeer, performing yet again for Christmas. Get their latest hit, Rum Balls, on iTunes. Two shows daily until Christmas Eve.

SOLD OUT

Rum Balls
2.5 cups 'Nilla Wafers, chopped.
1 cup chopped pecans.
1 cup chopped walnuts.
1 cup confectioner's sugar.
3 (maybe 4) tablespoons baking cocoa.
4 tablespoons raw honey.
1/4 cup (OK, 1/2 cup!) of Meyer's Dark rum, better add another half cup of chopped 'Nilla Wafers)

Mix dry ingredients in a suitable sized bowl. Blend well.

Make a depression in the dry mixture, add honey, followed by rum. Use a potato masher (not the kind the Germans used!) to blend dry and liquid ingredients.

When well mixed, let rest, have a hot buttered rum and prepare for the balling.

When the cup of Christmas cheer is empty, lay out wax paper, and begin rolling mixture into bite sized balls. I prefer to roll them all out first, then go back and roll them in crushed pecans or walnuts, crushed 'Nilla wafers, crushed candy cane, powdered sugar or cocoa powder.

Go wild.

Experiment.

Try bacon bits.

Most of all, enjoy.

Merry Christmas 2019!

Thanks for the compliment.

Mrs. Racer and I selected the river rock and carried it up the trail 70 feet from the river below the house. The contractor we hired to build the house worked as a mason with his father before becoming a carpenter, and he set the slate hearth and the stones. I rummaged around local lumber yards to find the maple slab we used for the mantle.

Thanks for the comment.

The hociR mark is a relic of using that image in another post. I just dredged it up to illustrate Kerrowdown being younger than I, and since I pulled the image from the archives while using my iPod, I didn't see the hociR mark until now.

So I think I figured out the mystery of the t-shirt.

I too had entered a photo in the Pentax Photo Gallery contest, but had forgotten it, as I was suddenly unable to log in, somehow my user name and password had become invalid.

So there you have it.

Anyone who has a Pentax Photo Gallery can enter one of their contests (limited to residents of North America), the current contest is astrophotography.

Hey Aaron, thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, from what I have learned the serial indicates it is most likely from 1988.

Odd that they were produced in M42 mount from the 1950's all the way through the 1990's.

And yes, these lenses seem to be awesome gems, although the newer versions are hit and miss for image quality. You appear to have gotten a decent newer copy, for sure.

As for the stiff aperture mechanism, it seems to be a common issue. And some have stiff focusing helicoids rather than stiff apertures. It must be something about the grease that was used during manufacture, coupled with the age of them. I have read that it can be remedied by a disassembly, thorough cleaning, and reassembly using proper lubricants.

I have an Industar 61LZ 50mm f2.8, and have coaxed some great images from it. I have been intrigued by the Soviet lenses, and wanted others since getting the Industar. I have a MC Helios 44K-4 f2 58mm on the way, and am searching for a Jupiter 9.

I am so excited about this I am posting it everywhere.

Has anyone else got one sent to them?

This t-shirt showed up in my mailbox today. No note inside the envelope, and I had no idea it was coming. I don't mean to be unappreciative, because it is cool they elected to send one out to me, even in my size, but I really want the hotshoe cover.

A thunderstorm rolled through here last night. I set up and patiently tried to get some pictures of lightning.

But.

The clouds were so low that the lightning was mostly in the clouds, and only lit the clouds up. Keep in mind it was after 9pm, and quite dark. The shadows of my house from the light on the shop can be seen across the yard, and lightning had illuminated the scene.

I feel like I got robbed.

I did get one shot of the lightning, and it looks like it hit a tree on the neighbor's property.

I already have two very capable and useful pickups. Even though I like the handiwork on that old Chevy, I am not in the market for another vehicle right now, especially one that isn’t good for much more than riding around in.

The K-1 is a great performer, and I really enjoy using older manual lenses. It forces me to spend more time with composition and exposure, and I feel results in better photography.

My rock crusher cone fire pit, from the upstairs porch. A 15 image panorama, shot with a Pentax K-1, and Pentax-A* 600mm f5.6. Stitched and processed with Adobe Photoshop.

This lens is awesome. Pixel peepers click through to my Flickr and view the full size image. Be forewarned, the final image was so large I had to save a smaller, "for the web" version, but even that is huge.
