Shooting multiple image panoramas is easy. I've been doing them since the film days. Back then there wasn't software to blend images and correct distortion. You would simply overlap the individual shots and line them up as best as could be done.

I have used focal lengths from wide to telephoto, all with great results, although sometimes the severe distortion of ultra wide angle lenses can create some bizarre compositions.

I have used my 300mm lens to create highly detailed images of large landscape scenes with 50 to 100 exposures.

Using shorter focal lengths I can create panoramic views of small spaces.

I do find that not every panorama stitching program will manage a group of shots well, so I try in each one until I get the best results.

I have even gone back and made digital copies of slides with my K-1 and then stitched the results digitally, getting great results for panoramic scenes that were originally a bunch of overlapping prints glued to poster board.

Go for it, experiment, have fun!

Well, the volcanic activity hasn't been active recently, although it is part of the current epoch, the Holocene period.

From Wikipedia:

QuoteQuote:

The Craters of the Moon Lava Field spreads across 618 square miles (1,601 km2) and is the largest mostly Holocene-aged basaltic lava field in the contiguous United States.[6] The Monument and Preserve contain more than 25 volcanic cones, including outstanding examples of spatter cones.[7] The 60 distinct solidified lava flows that form the Craters of the Moon Lava Field range in age from 15,000 to just 2,000 years.[8] The Kings Bowl and Wapi lava fields, both about 2,200 years old, are part of the National Preserve.

This lava field is the largest of several large beds of lava that erupted from the 53-mile (85 km) south-east to north-west trending Great Rift volcanic zone,[9] a line of weakness in the Earth's crust. Together with fields from other fissures they make up the Lava Beds of Idaho, which in turn are in the much larger Snake River Plain volcanic province. The Great Rift extends across almost the entire Snake River Plain.

Australia has it's share of volcanic activity, although most from much farther in the past, around 20 to 25 million years ago, there are some volcanoes that are from the current epoch, around 7,000 years old.

I know it doesn't look like it, but I was standing at the top of a cinder cone, at the end of this trail:

Not sure, but using Photoshop is how I learned to do it.

Make a 360 degree panorama.

Turn it upside down.

Change the image dimensions so they are the same height and length wise. Be sure to deselect Constrain Proportions.

Change it to 8 bits/channel.

Go to Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates, be sure Rectangular to Polar is selected, and click OK.

The result will have empty corners, so you can either use the Content Aware fill tool, clone in the empty space, or if there is room, simply crop it down to eliminate the empty corners. I did the latter on this one, as the sky occupied a large portion of the final result. On most of my attempts I have had to use the fill tool or clone in the corners.

Not sure if the freeware opensource Gimp has similar tools, but it might.

I use my K5IIs, A50mm f1.7 lens, a Pentax Auto Bellows M and Slide Copier For Auto Bellows M to copy slides and negatives.

A little work in Photoshop takes care of the color shift that has happened over the last 30+ years.

Works great.

Here is one from Kodachrome, cropped to a "panorama".

Handley Page HP-80 Victor K2 by Racer, on Flickr

This one was shot on film, and yes, that is the correct color after converting the negative and restoring the image. The lighting was mercury vapor, which cast a greenish light.

You’re welcome Rob, but I was just guessing.

It could be called that because it is a large, flat, dry lake.

There is a rock formation at the Northwest end, named the Grandstand, as it apparently resembles grandstands.

Thank you for the compliment Rob.

I think it is called Racetrack because the rocks move across the slippery silt on the playa in the wind, leaving trails.

Mrs. Racer 2.0 and I were out running errands today, and stopped at the Conway Pub and Eatery for a burger, fries and a beer. As we were leaving I shot an 8 image panorama with my K-1 and A28 f2.8.

The Conway Pub has been open since 1932, in the basement of the Masonic Temple in Conway, Washington. Always a great place for a beer and a bite to eat, and on weekends they have live music.

Oh, and it is a popular stop during the Oyster Run.

I think they are about 12 feet long, so they would make some pretty big winglets.

A bit off topic, but here are a couple iPod shots from the in house "roll out".

My rock crusher cone fire pit, from the upstairs porch. A 15 image panorama, one row of three, and three rows of four. Shot with a Pentax K-1, and Pentax-A* 600mm f5.6. Stitched and processed with Adobe Photoshop.

This lens is awesome. Pixel peepers click through to my Flickr and view the full size image. Be forewarned, the final image was so large I had to save a smaller, "for the web" version, but even that is huge.
