@patk, twitch, ducdao, jsherman: Thanks very much for the kind words! Glad to be a Pentaxian and part of this club!

Well, I only started shooting five years ago (with Nikon, digital, never shot film before) (my previous walk-around was the Sigma 30mm f/1.4) - and I found myself gravitating more towards street and travel shooting, and I started getting tired of carrying a DSLR around so I jumped on the M43rds system late last year.

M43rds was actually pretty good - very compact with IQ that I can live with despite the smaller sensor - but my problem was, aside from the 20mm pancake they didn't have any compact tele primes, so I was looking around for tele options and I saw someone post a picture of the Panasonic GF1 with a DA 70mm pancake mounted via adapter. And I was just astounded that Pentax had a 70mm f/2.4 lens that was ~ an inch thick. My jaw literally dropped when I saw that, I mean, who makes a 70mm pancake?

Sure, like any gearhead, I had looked at the Pentax K10D and K20D with interest before, but that was mainly because of the performance/feature set they had for the price. But I guess I had never really looked at the Pentax system before. To be honest, I had never really realized that Pentax was the place to be if you wanted an ultra-compact system. Imagine my astonishment when I discovered that Pentax actually had a complete set of pancakes, lol.

Though I debated a bit on whether I wanted to shift again, or wait and see what m43rds had up their sleeve - plus the (relatively) higher cost and lack of 'used' Pentax gear here in the Philippines (vs CaNikon) held me back a bit. But in the end, I just couldn't resist an ultra-compact APS-C system. So I guess I can pretty much say that these amazing DA/FA pancakes are pretty much what pushed me to Pentax.

Cheers!

First post!

I agonized on which DA pancake to get first when I went Pentax (got the K-x, former Nikonian here) just a few weeks ago - I was planning on either the DA 21 or the DA 40, since I could only afford one at this time.

Though I would have preferred the FL of the DA 21, plus the added bonus of better close focusing abilities, I ended up getting the DA 40, which by my thinking would serve very well as a general, do everything walk-around. And I can still use the 18-55 kit for wide shots.

Haven't had much chance to really shoot with this lens just yet, weather and work have been getting in the way, but the few frames I've been able to fire off have really convinced me that moving to Pentax is one of the best gear decisions I've made ever since I started shooting.
