I've never had Monarchs myself until this year when a forgotten Milkweed I planted a couple of years back re sprouted and I saw a Monarch landing on it. Seems they may be coming back as there is a lot of attention on re planting milkweed for them. If you plant some maybe you will get lucky too .:)

Thanks sinjin!

A new set of babies hatched about a week ago, here is one on a Tropical Milkweed that has been stripped by the bigger cats.

The first batch is going to be starting to go to chrysalis pretty soon I think.

Out of the 7 eggs I noticed on May 8 only 4 have reached into this large stage, with the biggest one about 1.5 inches now.
They are so big I no longer need the Q to get in tight, so I plan to get some better portraits with the K-5/3 in the next few days.
I have had them on potted plants up till now and they havent wandered off (except for the 3 that got lost or died earlier which I could not locate.)
But I think it is getting close to when they will start to wander off so I will be locking them in a butterfly cage soon.
It has been easy just letting them live off the plant but now I will have to remember to feed them, darn!
A short video of the munching machine is below.

The caterpillars are about 3mm now and are now sporting the striped look.

Definitely feeling lucky that I will finally get to raise some myself.

Check it out, a baby emerged. There are 5 more eggs that I can see on this plant.

I have now potted it and will keep in my office for a while so these little guys can be safe. :)

I plan to transfer them to a butterfly net house once they start to get more mobile and just feed them the leaves.

We've raised online bought Painted Ladies and wild caught Gulf Fritillaries with the grandkids previously.

I planted milkweed so I could try raising Monarchs and this is the first year I've had some fly in and lay eggs so I am looking forward to it.

Here is one of the Gulf Fritilaries.

No she was alive, I let her go in a spot a further away from the house. I have to catch and release them before my wife demands an execution :)
