As has been said, this has gotten way too technical.

I cannot comprehend how there can be such strong disagreements among people who all claim, or at least appear, to have expertise in the relevant subjects.

Personally, I am mostly interested in reducing noise, and when all is said by the respective contributors to the arguments, all that is said is worth nowhere near as much as a demonstration of the combatants in action. Does DXO not show us just that? Does it not show us that noise in FF is lower than in APS-C? If I understand correctly, there are statements in this thread (or links within) saying that it is only the normalized noise that is lower, and that comparing equal size images is not meaningful, and that images should be printed at their intended size, etc, etc. Unless I am misunderstanding something, these claims come across as, well, not so smart. Wouldn't you think that comparisons are most relevant when the images are viewed at the size at which they will be viewed??? As someone said previously, one is not going to change one's required print size in accordance with the sensor size.

While I'm here, I will remind people that DOF is not always important. If, for example, the background is 30 metres behind the subject, then a difference of 2 metres in the DOF has little significance. The point being that aiming for absolute equivalence is not necessarily important. If I can shoot my lens at f2.8 on my APS-C in order to obtain an appropriate shutter speed, sometimes that may be all that is required.

OK, please explain it to me like I'm a six year old, because I am, not for the first time, failing to understand.

I can shoot my 50mm lens on my APS-C body at f5.6 and obtain a specific image. I can also obtain, from the same shooting position, the same image (i.e. same exposure, FOV, and DOF) using a 75mm lens on my FF at f8. As it happens, my APS-C was set to ISO 100, which resulted in a shutter speed of 1/125th sec. My FF was also set to ISO 100, which resulted in a shutter speed of 1/60th sec. And that is that.

I now want to repeat the above, but the scene is darker, which results in my APS-C indicating a shutter speed of 1/30th, even after bumping ISO to1600. The the FF body now indicates a speed of 1/15th sec, also at ISO 1600. Under the circumstances, I am not sufficiently confident that this 1/15th SS is appropriate, and I wish for a minimum of 1/30th. I therefore bump my FF ISO to 3200, which magically results in the FF meter indicating a shutter speed of 1/30th, and I am where I want to be.

Now, if I were to view both of the above (second shoot) images at the same size, I understand DXO to be telling me that since the sensor tech level of my APS-C and FF is the same, I should pretty well end up with the same noise level. I believe there have been numerous posts demonstrating the lower noise level of FF using DXO methodology. But I understand you to be saying that such is not the case.

So where am I going wrong?

My head is already going in circles, resulting in lots of confusion.

Someone pass the Aspirin, please.

Is it not implied (understood) that the FF noise advantage is actually High ISO noise advantage?

Ah, got it. Thanks guys.

I've been wondering about this for some time, as I saw the DXO scores as definitive evidence of FF's noise superiority, and hence the validity of using increased ISO in equivalence arguments.

I can see the logic of what you say, but, again I have to wonder why DXO high ISO scores are consistently significantly better for FF bodies.
