kit lens upgrades suggestions? any with 'character'?

Tamron is super sharp wide open, good for the money.

Most lenses with character are sharp wide open, so you get a nice sharp --> smooth transition. The Tamron will get you there.

When you see people talking about *3d effect*, they really mean that the lens is sharp at wide apertures, so that the subject POPS out of the frame. You can get that with the Tamron.
