The tamron 17-50 has excellent IQ. I have been using it instead of my sigma 24/2.8, k28/3.5 and k35/3.5. I think you would need to go to zeiss ZKs to do better.

There's a Sigma 24/2.8 in the marketplace for $115.

Agreed. Tamron 17-50/2.8's manual focus is not suitable for hot zooms. It's fine for still images, though no joy like a Pentax k lens or DA limited.

Sigma 24/2.8 [both manual and autofocus]--------4
Tamron 24/2.5---------------------------------------------3
I believe the Tamron 17-50/2.8 at 24mm betters all of these.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, the sigma 24/2.8 is the way to go.
