It's not going to record the aperture if you're going to use the manual exposure mode. Use the "A" setting on the lens and it should record the aperture.

Ha! Thanks for the vote of confidence, but perhaps I embellished when I said "disassembled". I removed the front face plate and enough of the elements from the front end of the lens to reach the aperture blades and the front element of the rear group. I try to avoid disassembling further than I have to, particularly with a lens I'm unfamiliar with. :eek:

Disassembled and cleaned the dust & fungus out of an A 100mm F4 macro which I found at a garage sale in a box of lenses left on a shelf for 20 years, and took it out for some test shots resulting in the following:
