Yes, EXACTLY! :D It does have a..... um..... few problems as you put it. Great lens if you are color blind or like the color purple. Or, if you don't mind spending your spare time removing PF from ever shot you take with that lens. That was my experience at least. Other's may vary.

The Tamron 70-300 LD. Very sharp, very good color, very good contrast, very big and intimidating looking with TONS of purple fringing. Hens the nickname "the purple monster". So much so it can render some images useless without a ton of PP to remove the PF. I picked up a DA 55-300 to replace it after using the Tamron for a few days. The Tamron is slightly sharper, but the Pentax is better in all other areas. Those that love that lens say it is possible to "learn" to work to the lenses strengths and minimize PF. I don't particularly want to modify my methods for a cheap consumer zoom when there are other cheap consumer zooms that are far better for just a little more $. I still own the purple monster, but I no longer use it. I guess I should sell it one of these days.
Very possible, I've always used the built in hood with that lens. Maybe I should try something longer and see if results improve.

I have this lens as well and I'll have to agree with you on all points except CA. I don't get much CA with mine, and when it does show up it's usually very minor (Then again I own the purple monster, and am happy with anything that doesn't perform as badly as that). I don't use the 135mm 2.8 nearly as much as I should. It really can be a great lens. There is something odd about the way it renders though. Comparing it side by side with a 50 1.4, it's like it has great contrast but that the color almost falls out of the dark areas instead of just darkening like i see with the 50 1.4. Basically, blacks are almost too black. It's not necessarily a bad thing especially for B&W, just a little odd.

I had a lens like that. It had the Ricoh Pin. I had to neuter it so I could continue to use my other much better lenses...... Oh sorry you meant the A*135mm f1.8 was so good it gets stuck on your camera. My mistake.

Just wanted to let you know, I did mount the 35-105 on my Super Program and tested the 3-stage collapsible rubber hood I have for it. It vignettes at 35mm when fully extended. If I collapse the hood one stage, vignetting disappears. I didn't test it with any film, just observations through the view finder. I don't know if yours is collapsible like the one I have, but if it is, try collapsing it one step, it should fix the issue. On mine at least, the aluminum thread ring the rubber is attached to, although thick, does not seem to be the culprit for vignetting. Just wanted to let you know in case you were still looking for a replacement.

I can't speak to the performance on full frame as I have not tried that hood/lens combination on a film camera. Though, my collapsible rubber hood can be collapsed in three stages. I would think that at one of it's more collapsed positions it shouldn't cause any vignetting. Though I could be wrong, as I said, I haven't tested it on a film camera. Your cheap rubber hood might be a different kind then my cheep rubber hood. Then again, if yours is anything like mine, the metal ring that the rubber attaches to is quite thick and deep which might be causing the vignetting. I might just have to pull out my Super Program and see if I can see the hood edges in the view finder when the lens is set at 35mm. I'll let you know.
Rubber vs Metal - Me, I don't care if a hood is metal, rubber, plastic or even wood for that matter. As long as it does it's job, stays out of my way, and is easily stored. Seems yours doesn't fill that second part of that equation. Rubber hoods work well for me because I can collapse them and store them easier then metal ones. Just a personal preference really. I have some metal hoods and use them quite often. The only problem is they take up a lot of room which equates to 'in my way' in a sense.

Nice shots. The Pentax-A 50mm F1.7 is a great lens. One of my favorites, though I admit that it hasn't seen as much action since I got the F version of it and for that matter the A 50mm 1.4. Regardless, great lens that will produce wonderful results.

I use a collapsible rubber hood on my 35-105. I don't have a vignetting problem with it and even if I did it's collapsible for wide angle. It's kinda ugly and it isn't the greatest hood in the world, but it gets the job done. I think they cost like $15 or $20. Can't remember right now but I may have purchased it at Adorama.

Here's a shot using my recently acquired Pentax-A 35mm f2.8 @ f5.6. I was testing out the Bokeh and kinda liked this shot so I thought I would share it. It makes me thirsty. I think I'll have one.... or maybe another.

Thought it was about time to join the club considering I wrote the Pentax-A 35-105mm f3.5 Review in the 'In depth Review' section. I own a bunch of Pentax-A lenses. I love them all. IMO they look and feel like a lens should. The first lens I bought after getting my K-x last July was the a 28mm 2.8. Since then I've been steadily adding 'A' lenses to my collection. My latest acquisition are the 50mm 1.4 (which I have to say it's an amazing lens) and the 35mm 2.8 (which I think is better then my 28mm 2.8).
Anyway, you guys have done a great job with this club. The pictures I've seen in here are amazing. I'll have to add a some of my own when I get a chance.
