I recently got a second-hand Tamron 500/F8, and yesterday was sunny enough to use it. I'm not getting results as sharp as I'd like, but I think that's partly due to shooting hand-held and not having the shutter speed high enough. This was at 1/125s, taken through my bedroom window:
and this was at 1/160s:
from quite close. Both cropped but otherwise unprocessed, from a K-x. I got a 1.4x tele-converted at the same time, and I think I was getting better results from that with a kit 55-300mm.
