Assorted local insects. It's getting much more difficult to locate insects to photograph. After they cleared several meadows in a local wildlife area and planted some kind of grass I've never seen growing there, for all practical purposes the insects were gone.

Two very small insects from a few days ago. The spotted beetle is no more than 4mm long so the posted image is a deep crop.

The larvae down in their vertical tunnels are also voracious predators. Their physical design and method for capturing other insects is really interesting, an evolutionary development comparable to ant lions.

Tiger beetle, 160%. These fellows are very alert and quick to run or fly. Very difficult to get close to one.

I noticed that bee about 7PM position from the swallowtail in the first image. The edges of its wings in that image also look a bit frayed.

The butterfly in the image just above is what I would call a tiger swallowtail. Looks as though that individual has been around for a while, judging from the damaged wings. Perfect focus on its body. Nice crisp detail on the head, proboscis, body hairs, etc. Fine work.

Dog bane beetle and green lacewing fly. In my area there should also be a brown lacewing fly of about the same size, but I've never seen one.

four SCANS of insect images from the film era. These never look as good as a modern digital image. No EXIF but I know the mosquito was photographed with a 100mm bellows Takumar (original pre-set version) reverse mounted on a 200mm SMCA f4. The next twowere taken with either a 400mm f4 macro or a Tokina 90mm f2.5 macro, more likely the 200mm as that was my preferred lens for field macro work. The water strider was in a studio setting so more likely taken with the Tokina.

Thanks for the compliments and really glad yoy ike the image. The fly was cooperative, it just stood absolutely still while I got closer for the shot. You'd think it was wearing one of those head clamps from the wet-plate era.

I know what's been bugging you lately. Numerous interesting insects in your last two posts.
Here's a caterpillar that should go on another thread, but I'll put it here.

Ladybug beetle and the moth. Th latter is probably a male judging from the extremely feathery antennae visible at the lower right just in front of its eye.
