No we did not. We were driving a leisurely circuit around the Big Island, with accommodations reserved at convenient intervals so we could explore the sections between overnight stops. We never considered going to the top on Mona Kea. On a more recent visit to Maui we did go to the top of Haleakala to watch a sunset. Mona Kea is about 1,000 meters taller and much of the top has a perennial snow cover. If you want to be comfortable up there, significant winter clothing is required

FYI: This is in the Mohave Desert, southern California. I think it is the desert gopher tortoise (AKA just "desert tortoise") that's of concern. It's been listed as endangered for at least 30 years.

We were wearing Kahtoolas crampons (they call them "microspikes"), which have good spikes, but the ice on the road was too hard and sloped just enough so that the spikes couldn't get enough bite. Even sliding my feet forward, not lifting them out of contact, and I would start to slide backward immediately. It actually was not the most slippery ice I've tried to traverse. That was trying to cross a soccer (AKA football) plus baseball field. It was very cold, the field was covered by very powdery cold snow about four inches deep. But below that was a layer of ice from an earlier rain that was flat and smoother than a recently Zambonied hockey rink and it was hard as steel. I suddenly went down, then tried to get up with the help of my walking stick. Utterly impossible. I had to crawl through the snow for about 100 feet to where some grass (I think) was sticking up through the ice. After getting upright, I pretty much had to shuffle without lifting my feet to get to a gravel road along the edge of the playing field. There was also the time I was driving to pick up our son from a friend's house. There had been a freezing rain and it was drizzling lightly so there was a thin layer of water atop the icy surface of the road. I was crawling along not more that 10~12mph when I came to a long steep downhill stretch. I very carefully brought the car to a stop as I was intimidated by the prospect of attempting to go down that hill. Then the car started sliding sideways, as the surface was so slick the crown of the road was enough to make the car slide to the edge. I gave up on retrieving our son and managed to get home by driving very close to the snowbanks where the road surface had more texture so that the tires could get and maintain some grip.

A woods/logging road, long since converted to a hiking trail. It slopes upward, and on this day, covered by ice, it was unwalkable. We bushwhacked on the crusted snow to the side for a while, but it was too slow and too much labor, so we gave up our walk this morning. Tralee's muzzle at the lower left.
