Another monarch caterpillar. An old image. I've not seen one as yet this year despite checking out every milkweed along our walks.

Covid has been a royal pain for every country where there's been a significant outbreak. Truth is, a really hard, full lock down, rigidly enforced for three weeks would almost certain halt the spread totally. But the people, at least some of them, would bitterly complain that it interfered with their "freedom," and businesses would complain that they would go bankrupt. In fact at the outset with only a few scattered cases, most people and businesses would not believe that a crushing pandemic was developing. So instead we had half measures, covid continues to stalk and cut down the population month after month after month, and the businesses go belly up in even greater numbers than they would have had there been a really hard lock down right at the start. Darwin awards in abundance (note my sign-off below).

A very large grub, as big as any I've seen locally, that turned up when I was transplanting a buddleia. Right side up and rolled onto its side. I doubt it will survive now.

Three months without a single grub! This was an accidental image, discovered when processing images of spent cone flowers. Consequently it's a very deep crop, but it is a tiny caterpillar.

Glad you liked the image. Among the over 100,000 images I have from the "film era," chromes and negatives, some are worth converting to digital and sharing. The limitation is time enough to find the good ones at the same time I've just started going through thousands of image files from our recent trip Down Under.

Another specimen of the same type of caterpillar I posted just above. I think the previous image is better.

Pretty sure this is a lady-bug (or lady-bird) beetle larva awaiting aphids, of which there were many on this plant, being tended by farmer-ants.

I've seen a few of these about. This one was down on the ground, not the best setting or background for a good image.

Agreed. So many adult moths are routine and somewhat boring variations of white and shades of gray (how many?), but the caterpillars can be brightly colored or fascinatingly fuzzy, or in the case of the one you posted, a fine combination of colors and bristles.

We've been slightly warmer than normal. Areas south along the Atlantic coast have had exceptional amounts of rain. The southwest is once again drought-stricken with dangerously high temps week after week. Northwestern Europe has also had exceptional heat and dry. And that is not the end of extreme weather conditions this year. Let us hope it is not the "new normal."

Thanks PJV. How are things going down under? Any relief from the drought as yet? M&I may be visiting Australia around Sept-Oct '19. I expect you'll have everything nice and green for us by then.

Monarch caterpillar. I was really glad to see a several of these on a bug-photo outing. And some tiny aphids as well.
