+1 on that. I'm envious of the quality in that capture, both sharpness but also the general composition and pose of the bird.

This is a SCAN from a chrome so I cannot be sure of the lens used, but it was probably a Sigma 300mm f4 APO macro, with some cropping.

Thank you for the compliment. I suppose following your lead I could call myself Asahi Pentax S to K1, although I've moved away from Pentax to MFT.

I regularly pull up an old image to post and when I see the camera used, I wonder why I didn't just keep it and forego upgrading. This morning I posted an image of a butterfly that I would say had better than adequate IQ. I was surprised that is was taken with a K20D.

Yes, the coloration is gender specific. The male with the dark head might be considered more colorful, as is the common dimorphism in birds.

These mergansers aren't as dramatic as the pair posted by Lowelll Goudge earlier on this page. Lens not recorded in the EXIF but I'm pretty certain is was the 400mm f4 Tamron.

How much preening is needed to make this bird pretty? K5 + Sigma 50~500mm (1st version)

Sigma 50~500mm, original version, @ a nominal 500mm (closer to an actual 450mm). Very versatile lens, but like most wide-range zooms, soft at the long end. Some PP improved the image a little (second version below), but you cannot pull up detail that isn't there in the first place.

+1 on this and the preceding praise. Depending on the PP program you're using, you might try the "brightness" slider if you want a little more snap in that image.

+1. An image to be proud of, not for an apology because of the IQ.

Thanks. My error. I used both lenses for birds in Florida, but different trips. Will correct.

It was what I call a "location lens." Use when you know where certain wildlife will be, go there, set it on a tripod and be patient. NOT a lens to carry along just in case, nor to hand-hold under any circumstances. It worked very well with a Pentax 1.4XL converter, acceptable but not really great with the 2XL.

Tamron 400mm f4. I set it on a tripod and prefocused. The Tammy gave me some of the best BIFs I've managed to capture.

I knew that image had to be a consequence of knowledge, research, and persistence (weather might not cooperate). Congratulations on a superb image and the work that went into making it. BTW: a member of my local camera club made a similar image of the Moon directly behind "Quabbin Tower," a lookout for tourists visiting Quabbin Reservoir, the major source of water for Boston but located partially in my town. I don't even know where he was standing as the tower is not easily seen from almost any of the local roads.

+1 on that. Did you use an ephemeris to determine when and precisely where to stand to capture that image?

When I was looking at the image before posting , it was in a folder that would not show the EXIF data. As soon as I posted it, the EXIF appeared so I corrected the text.
