It's a point of discussion with lots of opinions certainly. I tend to turn it off. Now that I have the 150-500 the nearly unanimous opinion is to use the in-lens vs. the SR because it works better on very long lenses. I shoot soccer mostly at long distances, I'm not a birder or naturalist. Occasionally, less often than I'd prefer, its aircraft (used to be my job and it was great loving your job as a kid) and again for action shots SR off, for static shots SR on.

Thanks. Direct for now. We'll see if I think I need a head on it. I've used head on my previous monopod but always seemed to go back to direct mounting.

Happy at Christmas with my new MM9780 monopod. Thanks to all those that commented on my earlier thread asking about various monopods and their features. Wow, how can they sell this with all these features in apparently well made condition for only $58? Smooth movement on the locks, but they take a bit of getting used to after flip locks (not tightening them enough, but I'll get used to it). The retractable duel screw is a nice feature, I kept looking for how to flip it when it dawned on me (my daughter work me up very early and I do have the flu - at least those are my excuses) that you simply put it up to the smaller opening and it self-adjusts :lol: The grips on each lock are semi-hard rubber making for a good grip and nice fell. The main grip on the upper shaft is very large but has cuts that make gripping easier and more tactile allowing you to stay focused on the camera and what you are photographing. Spike is nice and the rubber foot is soft enough to gain purchase on a tile floor :lol: The only thing on it that isn't as well done as all the excellent bits is the strap, it just doesn't want to stay at any point other than fully extended the way it was threaded. I've fallen back on Lauren's guide to threading camera straps :D and it is now working a treat! Between the new Sigma 150-500 and this MM9780 monopod it's a whole new game for me when my son next takes the soccer pitch! I'm really looking forward to getting even better photos with my new gear. Again, thanks to each of the members who helped me in choosing a new monopod:)
