Further to what metalmania has advised I suggest that you read through all prior posts in this topic discussion, from page one, and if supplementary info is still felt needed use the forum Search feature (on the Menu above), because there are a few other good F.S specific or related topics here too.

You're right, what you ask has all been very well covered and there's been much valuable info posted from experienced owner~users of all types and brand screens available on the market, fitted to most or all Pentax DSLR models ever made.

I actually learnt a lot from that myself and would highly recommend taking the time to peruse through it all.
Trying to regurgitate it again here could not hope to cover all the essential good bits.

Will do, if it actually fits upside down :) I honestly didn't imagine that it might, and was expecting reversing it[¹] might have solved the problem in some weird way for you.

¹ Meaning putting the Tab to the opposite side, still at top though. Or conversely, spinning it back to front laterally 180°, reversible facing (same as).

I didn't put mine that way because I had just assumed that these Fresnels were designed to have a distinct front and back surface, ie. non reversible. Thus the offset tab[s] on camera FSs for assembly guidance indication -- which way they must 'face'.
Anyone know for sure?

Fwiw: Wikipedia seems to indicate so too Fresnel lens - encyclopedia article about Fresnel lens.

If you don't have really good eyesight, or a mag glass handy, try running a soft sable-hair brush over a genuine Pentax K-x FS and you'll soon see, by "feel", which face (side) of the lens (aka screen) has the fine cut grooves.

Thanks anyway ;) but that's not what I was seeking for mine, like I said I want it to behave so that results are MF = AF exactly, all the time, and with any and every AF lens.

Only then will I know that the new screen is matched to, and working properly with the camera. It's AF is correct so that's my only and logical benchmark.

And Ps: Yes you're right, it doesn't work "the Pentax fitted way" and I really don't care which way the screen or the shim works out to be best position. So I'll have to measure things up and see where or what the problem is. And if it still doesn't work out to give exact same as AF results, unconditional, no big loss and a lesson learnt. It goes in the bin with all the other wannabes and promise-the-worlds.

I have that same screen, got from eBay a few weeks ago.

1. The correct handed installation of a Pentax K-x/K-r screen is that the Tab must be on the right side when looking into the front cavity of the camera.

2. So I followed that and installed my Travor with the Tab on the right side in my K-x.

3. I since find that when I accurately Manual focus with it, that result does not exactly correspond with what the AF of the K-x will choose.

ie. If I now manual focus with any lens, then touch the AF button (or half-press the Shutter), the camera will motor-adjust focus which then puts the split-prism off slightly. :(

So before I change anything, can you please confirm if that model screen is installed with its Tab on the left (looking inside the front K-mount), that both AF and~or MF will then both correspond and give the exact same focus result-position of the lens?

Yes I think your retranslation of R.Ks claim applies well, because most "things" in the world comprise of horizontal and vertical lines form.
(Photographers in Egypt and France would have to make one-off exceptions.)

And by that principle the Canon Ec-L style should be a better solution than the diagonal types, would you agree?

No only the central prism, or part thereof, blacks out. (which is basically the bit you're relying on really!)

I think you probably missed reading this page here...
Katz Eye Plus - KatzEye Optics
...which describes that situation and what happens (visually) fairly well.

Caveat: I'm not being a shill for Katzeye product here, just imposing on their more detailed info (which most sellers either don't mention, or evade addressing when challenged for actual detail).

Sorry I honestly can't relate from experience regarding exactly what happens in day or night light etc., because I'm still waiting delivery of an eBay prism screen myself. Decided to tread the water with a [very] cheap one first, and maybe buy better later if it shows its potential for whatever similar photo situation's usage much like you describe. Yeah I drool for visually accurate pinpoint-sharp confirmation too, esp. for Macro obsession where MF is desirable (and often necessary).

I suspect, and am hoping, but again can't affirm yet, sorry; that there's possibly less of a blackout issue (reasonable ambient light permitting) in practice in many common circumstances due to the fact that we physically perform the M.focus visually through the VF at max aperture anyway. Provided using normal modern AF/aperture controlled type lenses, or, aperture-ring equipped ones with (and on) an "A" setting. Pre-stopped down manual lenses excepted of course.

After reading much from other users of SP VF screens here and elsewhere, I reluctantly concluded that it has a lot of "individual thing" dependence to it. Everyone's circumstances and needs are different and I just had have to try for myself. Is due for delivery soon and I can't wait.
If only it were easier than that. :(

Rough guess I'd say that one good reason why you wouldn't have been so noticably affected on older cameras is because SLRs (those film era tools) usually have had decent sized, clearer VFs, compared to the pissy little squint-city ones on most DSLRs. (blackout is a type of visual light-loss issue, that occurs at decreased-size apertures).
Otoh; you couldn't miss observing that all (mostly same) mfgrs now do not fit digital SLRs with split prism by default, and there are many sound reasons why. Crazy as it might seem.

You aren't alone in pondering this conundrum Btw, it's an interesting subject esp. for many of us, remembering the old, and moving to the new tech.
I found the following website informative, some useful material in its FAQs/Tips etc. -- worth a read to help be awake to the tradeoffs before committing to split prism:

Pentax DSLRs - KatzEye Optics

Fwiw: My big wish is for DSLR makers to make changing focus-screens on all models a quick and simple task for the user/owner, then we could safely play and customise to our need, which is often temporary too.
Sadly, only the more expensive and sophisticated models offer that which to me sort of limits the whole "interchangeable" aspects of owning DSLR.

HTH.

Ouch! that's bad to hear. :(
What size magnifying glass were you using to inspect your new screen to confirm the existence of those supposed bits of attached film?

Since the big bang there have been countless types evolve from various etailers on planet eBay. I think they breed...

focusingScreen.com and katzeyeoptics.com also cultivate the monsters in various flavours -- best cooked and served up with your favourite side salad and washed down with a stiff shot of battery acid of suitable vintage. Be careful if driving afterwards.
