My favourite yard bird showed up yesterday - right outside my lockdown workspace window!

I learned something new too: Hawfinches eat the tiny apples from our Malus sargenti hedge, and they do it the same way that pine grosbeaks eat rowan berries: Carefully pick one fruit with their oversized bill - scrape off all the yucky fruity bits - happily chew the seeds!

Lockdown limits most things, but this is one experience I would not have had without it. Taken through the window pane - I think pp was able to eliminate most of the window haze.

A rare bit of sun yesterday, and for a while the world had actual colours...

Those are your YARD birds? Now I feel like moving...

Well, I guess when it's not November, we do have some nice local species too. Not as spectacular - but anyway. Here's a blue tit, one of the only Danish birds to owe its blue colour to pigmentation. Back in May when colours were visible outside.

European version of a bluejay. Not as blue as yours, normhead.

This summer I finally managed a decent redstart shot.

One good thing about winter: We get waxwings!

They are terribly hard to catch in flight, but they are pretty enough sitting still too.

Ooooh... now I have a bad case of species envy. We don't have any sunshine either... :(

Beautiful birds - and photos!

Snow in France - and not a flake in Denmark yet. So weird. I'm sure the yard birds don't mind though.

Beautiful. Another species I have never seen!

Here is a bit of an imposter: A long-tailed tit, which is NOT actually related to our tits and your chickadees. On the other hand it's a close relative of your bush tits... and anyway, I guess it's unfair to blame the bird for the names we gave it. :)

Lovely photos, Dr Orloff! I use the DA*300 myself, and I can identify with your flight distance problems! :)

Here's another marsh tit. (EDIT: Ack! A coal tit! A coal tit! :o   Sorry!)

I didn't manage to isolate my subject as well as you did - but they are very cute...

Yep, all the corvids in Denmark are benefitting from lack of persecution. You even see ravens regularly these days! :)

I have an anti-november yard bird: Robins are in our yard all year, but they won't sound (or look) like this for a loooong while yet:

Oh - and there is a bird with absolutely NO cross-Atlantic similarity: Our robin looks, sounds and behaves totally unlike the american robin. I wonder what on earth went through the minds of the settlers when they decided to name that one... :p

True. I think it is really funny, actually, how adaptations to similar environments produced "sets" of extremely similar birds. Some are the same species, but your sparrows are not closely related to our sparrows - but they still have similar behaviour and look a bit the same.

And then for instance you have hairy and downy woodpeckers, we have lesser and greater spotted woodpecker - different species but same "pair". And you have the golden crowned kinglet / ruby crowned kinglet, we have the firecrest / goldcrest - same pair! :)

(Would have been great to insert a firecrest here, but I don't have a good one. And definitely not as a yard bird - they are rare in Denmark)

Yes, day old chickens. Little owls refuse to take carrion, normally, but if there is a pair, and you leave freshly dead animals near their perch, they act as if their mate brought home prey for them... we use it to help them raise larger broods, because the little owl is threatened by extinction in Denmark.

Here's a fieldfare from last winter, hoping to see those soon again too!

OOoh yes, I love owls too! I have a little owl feeder shot that should count as a yard bird photo - although it wasn't my yard. But I was lucky enough to be allowed to pitch my hide in it! ;)

Well - that settles it. Australia wins!

(Psst, by the way Craig: Did you see the "12 days of christmas - revival-thread"? I know it's too early for the "c-word" but it would be great to get some summer Christmas celebration pics in the thread, if you might consider joining. And that parrot is perfectly christmas coloured anyway: Put a ribbon around it and tie it to a spruce tree and you have the best christmas ornament imaginable!) (Not the most animal friendly maybe, but the prettiest)

If the competition is for red-ness, noone trumphs this guy: (Cheating, he is yours, but he was in our yard at the cabin we rented in Florida)

Most of the time I think North American bird species outshine ours in terms of colour. But our bull finch is hard to match! :)
