Well, it seems like this answers the question at hand, as far as why it won't stop-down meter with the tubes.
I guess we'd have to ask Pentax for the answer as to why they designed it this way. But at least I know now what my issue is.
Interesting thoughts nonetheless. It isn't like there aren't ways around this, and I may play with some settings later, if I try the tubes again.
Thanks to everyone for all the input and discussion. Very enlightening :D

Hmm, haven't played with the tubes very much, but it could be (as suggested earlier) that the metal part is the problem (or rather, a lack of [conductive] metal). The camera seems to sense a lens' presence if pins are shorted (by contacting any conductive metal, having electrical connections or not--I used a key while the lens was off, and it tried to stop down=it sensed that a 'lens' was there). But I'll be able to tinker more the next time I use the tubes...;)
I'd be interested to know how you got it to show DOF in the viewfinder all the time (like a constant DOF preview). I glanced through the settings and didn't see anything pertaining to it....

That's different. What kind of lens are you using? And any idea about what setting you're using to stop-down the aperture in real time (instead of upon the shutter release)?

Now that you say that, I tried shorting each contact pin (without a lens on, obviously), and it stopped down regardless of which pin I was shorting.... seemingly as long as at least one was shorted, it thinks there's a lens... interesting

Yes, I use mine with that setting enabled. The problem is that there's no way for me to get a light reading w/ the tubes. I plan to try using the green button to meter wide open, and then adjust from there.
Right now, using tubes on my K-x, it's like using an old Pentax K1000 with a dead battery :)
EDIT:
Well, I'll keep that in mind for future reference; however, the tubes are John's, so I'll try to hold off attacking his equipment with duct tape for the time being :p

I tried this, and I'm starting to see how it works. That must be the problem. I'll have to look at the tubes again, but I'm sure that's it.
Does it do this wide open in the case of a lens that uses the aperture lever?

Thanks for the help so far :) . I'm going to try to find out what the deal is.

I'm using M mode. It stops down normally with Av button (or Green button on DOF setting). No problems with the manual lenses, but nothing happens at all when tubes are attached.
That could be it (though I don't know why). They're John's tubes, so I'll have to check with him/check them out some other time.
The exact same tubes (even with the same lens attached--either mine or his). Both work on his, neither work on mine.

I've been using manual lenses lately, and employ the 'Av/Exposure Compensation' button on my K-x a lot(where, on a manual lens, the camera will stop down the aperture, take a reading, and calculate a shutter speed--similar to the Green Button/DOF preview).
I tried using some extension tubes the other day. They had no contacts (and it was a fully manual lens, anyway; hence, no need), just the aperture control 'switch'. However, neither stop-down metering nor DOF preview worked with the tubes attached. John tried it on his K20d, and it works, and my K-x works fine without tubes...
Anybody have this problem or know how to resolve it?
Thanks!
