mhsp1948, do not get disgouraged. Post some of your photos into the Critique area on this site one at a time. There are quite a few wonderful members of this site that will offer helpful and constructive suggestions and input on how you can improve the image or how you could have taken a better photo of that scene. This will help you to improve your skills both taking photos and in post processing your images. PEG will be here for a very long time. After you have run several of your photos through the Critique area and learned from that process, visit the PEG and take a good hard and long look at photos of the style that you lean towards to see what has qualified to be in PEG. Then go take some photos and process them using what you have learned and submit one or two. I would not recommend submitting several photos but rather submit one or two photos to see how they are received by the judges. This will not be an overnight process getting your work closer to or possibly over the bar, but it will hopefully be an enjoyable journey while you learn and improve your work.

The email you received stated your submittal was rejected for one of two reasons; it was either not within the size requirements OR it did not contain any camera information. Given what you have stated about the photos size, I am guessing your submittal was rejected due to the missing camera information or EXIF data. That is the EXIF data that is digital data embedded in the photo's data that identifies the camera used, the lens, camera settings, date/time, etc. about the photo. It is captured and saved when the photo is taken. If the photo you submitted was a scanned image of a film photo, then there would not be any EXIF data in the image.

I'm pretty sure that the judges do not know who submitted a photo as a PEG candidate.

Flawed site script files? Either the script files have some flaws / holes in them, or there is some Admin "assistance" being provided... What is needed is for more members to come forward if one of their photos is "submitted" without them actually taking any action.

It also might help their chances significantly to upload the photos into the Photo Critique area and let the other members give their comments and recommendations on how you can improve your photo prior to submitting it for possible inclusion into PEG. Just a thought from the fence...

If you have received the rejection email message, any comments made would be on that message.

I don't even want to think about how many rolls of Tri-X B&W film that I went thru before getting into doing my own bulk loading. I'd venture to say that most of us that have been into photography long enough probably cut our "photography teeth" in B&W. Color was too expensive and too unforgiving for a home darkroom.

I may just take some of my RAW photos and see how they look in B&W.... Could be interesting.

Out of curiosity, did you mention anything in the comments you can post with your submittal about the rain streaks being rain streaks? I don't know if the judges read the comments we leave or not, but I would think something like what you mentioned here would have been read and noted.

This is not Flicker or any of those other sites, it is the Pentax User's Forum and the Pentax Exclusive Gallery. And the members of this site are most likely quite different than those other sites. To compare PEG to Flicker (et al) is like comparing an apple to a snowball. One thing I have learned by my own submittals is that they are looking for images that are exceptional. Someone once told me to think about having a room with prints of most of your photos and no room for another. When you take a photo that you feel is "The Photo", is it really so attention grabbing that you would take down one of your prized prints so you could hang it in it's place?

That will have to be Adam's call as this site's admin.

This could easily lead to a lively debate because someone could take it to the point where they argue that they had a Pentax teleconverter between their Vivitar lens and their Canon body but since there was a Pentax part in the setup, they should be able to submit a photo for PEG. If it were to be called to a vote, I would have to vote that the camera body must be a Pentax (or Ricoh now that they own Pentax) body. The EXIF data is checked by the site for submittals I think.

It sounds like the misty weather may have been a factor in how your photo turned out. Did you mention anything about the misty weather in your comments for the photo you submitted? I don't know if the judges take our comments into account when they view our submittals, but it can't hurt to give them any information about something that may have been a factor if we're permitted to do so via the comments.

Would it be possible (or feasible) to make PEG a true gallery for the PHOTOGRAPHIC abilities of the submiting photographers and NOT their ability to manipulate an image with PhotoShop or any other post processing? or perhaps what is needed is a PP-PEG and a NonPP-PEG. Now I realize that this might mean that some (perhaps a lot) of the photographers who have had photos accepted would find their photos no longer in PEG since they PP'd their way in vs photographed their way in...

While we're revamping things, perhaps it's high time to have quanitifiable, identifiable, "check the box" criterion for admission to PEG instead of letting it be a matter of some unknown judge's whim... That would ensure there would be much better consistancy and those submitting photos would know up front what is needed to be approved. And require a detailed rejection notice to help the submitter to know exactly why his/her photo did not make it.

Ash - I would welcome discussing this with you either in PM or via E-mail.

Since I am not a professional photographer and I do not Post Process my photos to change them from how they were taken into "something else", I'll probably never see any of my photos in any of the "exclusive" galleries here. But I'll keep submitting and collecting rejection messages with the hope of one of two things happening. Either someone will finally see merrit in not using PP for Pentax camera photos or I'll end up with the biggest pile of rejection messages! :ugh: :D

I just want back and printed out the rejection message that I received and yes, there were comments on the photo at the very end of the message.

As to whether I agree with the comments or whether the judge (or judges) involved in making those comments had an idea what I was seeking to capture with the photo is debatable. I would very much welcome a private exchange with the judge that made the comments via E-mail to keep the judge's identity and comments out of the public forum and so we may freely discuss his/her comments so that I might learn from this. Feel free to send me a PM to obtain my E-mail address. I erroneously identified the bird in my photo as a sparrow when it was really a finch. Thank you in advance.

Ash, you said what you said in a VERY positive and heartfelt way!! And I thank you for your sage advice!! And perhaps it may be time for me to look into using PP... I can acknowledge that PP is a tool that can be utilized and in a lot of instances, the resulting photo is (or may be) improved through skilled use of that tool. But could it hurt to have a hall for non-PP submittals, a hall for PP improved/enhanced submittals, and a hall for "I took several photos and made something I think it totally unique and wonderful with PP" submittals? That way each style could stand on its own and still showcase the sheer power and capabilities of the Pentax products.

Maybe there should be a delay in judging! I think the judges should be required to take a 2nd and even 3rd look at any photo they are about to vote NO on to make sure they really want to vote NO. And if they are not able to definitively identify what the photographer was thinking and what his/her purpose for taking that particular photo was, they have no way to know that the photo they are about to reject met all of the photographer's intended purposes, criterion, etc. for the perfect photo to take of the given object/subject at that time and place. I think the gallery might just be improved if the judges were to take their time viewing the photos instead of worrying about "edges having too much noise", and other things that "could be fixed with Photoshop", etc.

Adam - Edges? Sharpness? I do not own a copy of Photoshop and if I did, I would not use it because I do not believe in Post Processing a photo. The only amount of PP I will do is to adjust the size of a photo when required for submittal given the criterion. I don't zoom in to view the edges of a photo. Why? The people viewing a photo on their screen or printed out on a color laser or ink printer probably will not be able to see any anomalies of the edges. They probably will also not see any "noise" that might be present. And correcting those things would not be a true representation of the "as captured" photo! What results is a "as doctored up photo". As for sharpness, you try to capture a photo of a finch that does not want its photo taken when you're using a 500mm mirror lens while hand-holding your rig and see if you can get minute sharpness of each individual feather and detail of the little critter. Could I have post processed sharpness to the point where it would be crystal clear and razor sharp? Possibly...but that's not what I believe in doing because it's not a true representation of the photo as taken. You stated that we should "correct minor issues that can be corrected with Photoshop prior to submitting", what is we as photographers do not believe in doing that? This is NOT the Photoshop forum, it is the Pentax forum!! And not all of us believe in using PP. Personally, I think PP should be done in the restroom thank you.....not the darkroom! :hmm:

I have to say that I totally agree with Slopez!! The announcement does state very clearly that "Feedback on your photo will be e-mailed to you once a decision has been made" yet all that's sent is a robot rejection message. I realize that the judges would not be able to approve or reject photos in a "production line" manner if they had to provide the stated feedback, but they might also not be so quick to reject photos if they knew that their decision might be questioned because they actually had to justify it. As it is, a photographer submits what he/she feels is a very high quality photo and they are only told that it did not meet some mysterious criterion for acceptance. How can a photographer come to know what he/she needs to do prior to submission to have a snowball's chance in heck of having their photo accepted when stated feedback is not provided?

We photographers should not have to submit our photos to the critique area prior to submission for the PEG or the Exclusive Photo Gallery. The judges should just have to do their full jobs and provide their reason(s) for rejection.

Not everyone chooses to PP their photos prior to submission feeling that their photo should be able to stand on it's own. Actually, this forum should have a PP Photos area and a non-PP Photos area for each of the exclusive type galleries. That way photographers would be competing against peers of like mind. And photos that are "built/created" in the "darkroom" instead of solely with the camera should be also judged and stored separately. Why not treat the Exclusive Photo Gallery and PEG as floors within a museum and have different areas/wings for these categories? Then photographers could admire the photos that follow their way of thinking or methodology.

Just my thoughts...
