Pentax K-5 and A50f1.7. I arrived at my favorite guesthouse/campground and was told that I had to go to Dona (10 more kms) to see their big festival. This is some sort of King and Queen contest for the 20 somethings in the village during their harvest festival (oddly held on Thanksgiving weekend). I found myself in awe of this smoking hot girl running the table at a local bar last weekend. I was shooting at iso3200 and f1.7 but the shots turned out fairly well. Then I used the predator artistic filter in Gimp since showed off the lines well. A hustler by abacus07, on Flickr

Thanks, I guess I'm desensitized to the heights now since Taiwan is a vertical country and there are some amazing suspension bridges in other parts.

We've been doing a little community project here at PF with a traveling nifty fifty (A50f1.7). I've been blogging it for the last year and it was finally my turn to take some photos with the lens last week. If anyone wants to take part just reply in the nifty fifty thread (linked in my sig).
I was nervous but I had great weather for some hiking on an almost typical (a little better than normal) weekend. Everyone's photos are available at the Traveling Nifty Fifty Blog. Thanks. Here are the rest of the photos I took that weekend with the A50/1.7. Cosplay is very popular here and I think the costumes are the best in Taiwan based on the flickr galleries I've looked at. Cosplay, Tainan, Taiwan by abacus07, on Flickr

Luckily there isn't anything wrong with my new apt because I'll admit that I didn't really check out my apartment that much when I decided to rent it. I had pretty much decided on it because of the 180 degree view of the city that it offers.
These were shot with the A50/1.7 which got a lot of exercise yesterday. Kaohsiung, Taiwan by abacus07, on Flickr

On my K200D I have found that noise isn't that bad at closer focus distances but for mid/long distance the noise is ugly (iso 800/1600). It's been awhile since I used my A50f1.7 since March is a Takumar month (the 105 is my Single in March lens) and I've been evaluating a pair of M50f1.7's that were included in Ebay lots. I can only sell them if I know they are perfect.
Here is one of my last shots that I took with my A50/1.7 (possibly a repost). It supports both your theory (good lighting) and mine to an extent (closer focus). the shutter speed is also very fast since I had been shooting in the dark. Not sure what the key variable is there are definitely times when high iso is okay on the K200D/K10D. Breaktime, Lantern Festival, Kaohsiung, Taiwan by abacus07, on Flickr

Here is my last photoset from my Taipei trip 10 days ago. Shifen Falls, Taiwan. The main falls were shot with the K24/2.8 and will be posted there. The rest were shot with an A50/1.7.

It was one of those trips where everything happens better than the plan and then you get a little extra luck.
Here's a shot from tonight of the neighborhood bridge (2-3 minute walk). I tried to photograph this a couple of weeks ago but the fountain shut off as I setup my tripod. Not this time. |

My final night in Taipei (some waterfall pics to process and upload still). I spent several hours walking back and forth between the DaZhi Bridge and the Grand Hotel. And I also stumbled upon an amazing poi fire performance (in the K club). such a perfect end to a trip.

I just had a fantastic 3 day trip to Taipei and I think I'll be processing photos for the rest of the week. It was outstanding. Bridges, skyscrapers, waterfalls, Chinese architecture and an unexpected and awesome poi fire performance (in the K club tomorrow-ish). I am becoming a bigger and bigger fan of the 50mm focal length and most of the photos this weekend were taken with the A50/1.7. Some will be in the K club (K24/2.8).
Here are the first 3 that I have finished.

It's strange but I think I can count on one hand how many pedestrian accessible bridges there are over roads in Kaohsiung (pop 1+M).

The A50/1.7 at the Kenting Aquarium, Taiwan. The keeper rate wasn't very high as I struggled with the lighting, reflections and manual focus. Catch in focus was a lifesaver though and produced a few keepers. Here's the first of a jellyfish. |

Most of my East Coast of Taiwan pics are in the M Club (M28/2.8) but I needed a short telephoto (A50/1.7) for this waterfall. It appears to be mostly inaccessible and this was the only place to take a photo that I could find.
