Zeiss is out of my price league and I am too lazy for MF lenses, anyways. Your reasoning sounds good except i wouldn't know whether the 43 is that much wider than the 50. But, the 43 ltd. is a better performer than the 50's though. Infact I think the 31 would be too close to the 43, that I am not even craving for it (frankly don't see the 31 to be any better after viewing the images at Pbase and Flickr).

I bought it as it would be a suitable portrait lens (I don't shoot just the face, but include the torso or the whole body with my portraits). This will d the trick and stopped down to F4, it would be perfect for landscapes for which I crave edge to edge sharpness and micro-contrast, none, not even the 31 is better at F4.

This is a new lens, and I am at the puppy love stage, so there is that factor.

But, unless you can do focus adjustment, I would not recommend this to you. My images at 1.9 were very soft prior to dialing in +120 in my K10D.

LOL, that's good. But, the funny thing is the only weakness that anyone says of the 43 is it's performance wide open. So, all these shots are as bad as it will ever get with this lens. I am sure the OP wants to see how really bad it is wideopen and weather it is acceptable for him. So, your LBA is from the weakest performing aperture.

At this aperture the bokeh is nice, but may be bettered by the 31 and the Zeiss disatgons and may be evn the Vogitlander 58mm 1.4. Nothing else comes close. Contrasty lens. Stopped down to F4 there is no lens available for Pentax that will match it's sharpness.

It's the cheapest of the three FA's...you can't go wrong. It's a razor thin focus (see the difference when I focussed at the eye vs the yelid, so the focus HAS to be spot on, otherwise it will jsut be an ordinary lens. You need focus adjustment to fully enjoy this lens.

I went around my home and took some snapshots, hand held with the built-in flash. Rememeber the lens is softest at this setting, and only 100% crops show it and that too is not bad for hand held. Staright from camera JPEG, 0 sharpening.

Focus on eye lid

100% crop

Focus on the eye

100% crop

Focus on the upper knob

100%

Focus on the eye

100%

Focus on the face

100%

Now one at f5

100% crop

The lens is not that soft wide open, dreamy bokeh and really shows the texture of the object (plastic looks platic, stone looks like stone etc.). I love this lens.

P.S: A guy is seeling one for $360 in the marketplace in mint shape (silver I think).

Yours needs focus adjustment, before I tuned in the +130 focus adjustment with the 'russian debug mode' it did the same.

I have a sample downloaded with the 100% crop of the focus point. It is a freaking unbelievable lens, words cannot explain how great it is. My picture doesn't do justice, but will show 100% crop. This was taken handheld though.

The whole image (focus is at 'BOY')

Center 100%
