I'm glad they kept that motor especially since majority of their lenses are still screw-driven.
Someday yeah all Pentax lenses will probably get updated to in-lens motors, as is evident in what Pentax is doing right now (e.g. the release of the 55-300 PLM, 18-50 DC WR RE)
I'm wondering how they'd do that for the Limiteds though. Adding that motor would surely increase the size of the lenses, and kind of goes directly against what Limiteds are mostly about: great build and compactness.

as someone from the Philippines I can vouch that there are no lens plants here those are all in Vietnam with parts coming from Japan. Only bodies are assembled here in a processing zone in Mactan, Cebu.
Also, I doubt the 12-24's gonna go anywhere even when the 11-18 arrives. They're vastly different lenses in features, the only similarity being both UWA. It would be unwise for Pentax to just drop out the other DA* lenses just because a "connection" has been severed with Hoya and Tokina. (the 12-24 is also not SDM... apparently your statement is very much floating with imagination :) )
Anyway, ignore list you go!
as for this lens, I hope Pentax rolls out sample images shot with it (with EXIF data) soon!

nice catch on the taped features, but best bet is a zoom lock to counter zoom creep;
could be a focus limiter (but for what? it's not a macro... and I doubt the focus throw on this lens is long)
something's up; the covered part on gold ring should indicate the filter thread size right? is it possible they're not even final with the optical formula for this lens?
(because the filter thread size might still change?)

most likely a zoom lock as some have said, I doubt a focus limiter since it's easy to go from infinity and down with most wide-angles.
and the final letters are probably just SDM [IF] (and prolly ED, but I'm not very knowledgeable on special lens elements)

Yeah I thought about that a little later. thanks for mentioning the proper term - internal zoom. But that's alright, it isn't disappointing. It's just that internal zoom and focus are truly stellar design features for me

it's just that a lot of folks were wondering about Pentax's long silence (disregarding the KP, at least) after the K-1's release
this new lens is also the only other f/2.8 UWA zoom out there aside from the Tokina 11-16 of yester years, is it?
been browsing through Canikon's APS-C lenses and can't see an UWA at that max aperture

I hope it's an [IF] lens that doesn't extend like the DA*50-135...
but I guess that's unlikely.

Good to see Pentax keeping its promise on the roadmap.
Hey wait, gold ring?!
