Most team sports are usually more fun to watch if you actual play or played them. I haven't played for some time, but we used to arrange pickup games around world and euro cup games so we could hit the pub for some grub and watch the more interesting matches, this was always infinitely more fun than watching at home alone.
The World Cup often has some of the most amazing displays of skill out there, and every few tournaments we usually get to see something so shamefully embarrassing that you'll remember it for the rest of your life. All in all, it's pretty good viewing to me.

Many players are in the 12km range, but I suspect this is their total distance moved including walking, running, tripping, and being carried off on the stretcher. Some of the goalkeepers are hitting 5km per match.
