To avoid the felt irregularities, you can lie the cup on it's back on the felt and shoot from above, you may need to weight down the inside or rig up a couple door stop type things under the mug to keep it from rolling. This separates the visible edges of the mug from the background. This is assuming you want a nice crisp outline.

Andy's question of what was your goal here is a good one:), if we know what you were after it's easier to offer advice on how to get closer to your target:).
