Are we really THAT rare?

I agree, but why don't they do this? Surely company like Ricoh knows this. Have they just written off the North American market.

Indeed, at least in my area its gone from bad to worse. A few years ago here you could still buy a Pentax at Best Buy. Maybe you can now, but they don't have one on display like they used to. The local camera stores we had, one of which did carry Pentax's back in the film days, have died with the two new ones are exclusively Canon. Waxman's in downtown Denver that used to carry Pentax's is gone, although I guess there's a Pentax dealer somewhere in Denver. The only Pentax dealer I've run across recently at all was in Jackson's Hole, although that's interesting given the huge amount of photography done in that location.

Anyhow, in terms of marking in North America, Pentax just isn't. Why?

I finally ran into another Pentax user at our local airport. The Experimental Aircraft Association had a Ford Trimotor in town, and as I was waiting to get on with my camera, a gentleman with a camera gave me an odd look as I was holding on to my K-3. I looked at his camera, and it was a Pentax DSLR. The first one I've run into in the wild.

Was out of town the other day in a restaurant when I got the comment "Beautiful camera!" from a young woman at the next table.

Doesn't really fit this conversation, but at least some folks recognize the camera as nifty. This was the new K-3.

I actually ran into the first "Pentax in the wild" over the weekend. Ironically, it was in the hands of an old friend whom I caught up with after we attended a business meeting and had the opportunity to visit a historic site thereafter.

The friend is a fellow that I knew shot Pentax film cameras, and in meeting up with him I recalled that the last time we were both in locality with our cameras, they were Pentax 35mms and we were discussing options for switching to digital. I made the determination some time after that and I'm now on to K-5 II. He did the same and has been shooting a K-5 for awhile.

Zeiss film cameras were excellent and I've always been a bit surprised that a good Zeiss digital DSLR hasn't appeared.

But I don't think the popularity of Zeiss explains this. Here in the 1970s I'd see a lot of Pentax film cameras, and I bought two 35 mm Pentax SLRs here locally myself, which is how I became introduced to the brand. But now a person couldn't buy one locally if they tried. Pentax has lost market share for some reason. As a good, and all weather, DSLR it's odd.

I'm also curious about the K3 firmware comment.

White DSLRs? Wow. One would be no surprise, but more than one really is.

I wonder if that is due to Pentax's, or rather Ricoh's marketing focus on Asia? They seem to be comfortable really focusing their efforts on Asia, and I wonder if that spills over to Australia?

At last weekends sled dog races . . .

1. One Pentax (mine).

2. Two Nikons.

3. About a million Canons. Including one which the owner of, whom I didn't know, had me look at the telephoto lens he we using.

Being rare isn't bad, but being so rare you look like an endangered species does cause some concern.

On rarity, I see quite a few questions of the "so what?" type. I.e., why does it matter?

Well, at some point market rarity equates with extinction. I think that is why it matters. In the back of our minds, I suspect a lot of us worry a bit that Pentax will go extinct, and at that point our camera familiarity and equipment starts heading for extinction. I have a Zeiss camera, for example (an old 35 mm). . . of what real value is that in a digital photography world?

On boosting their product, would it have hurt to have one Pentax in the recent National Geographic photography issue? A lot of us Pentaxians regard the Pentax as an all weather camera and yet, in a setting featuring outdoor photography, it was Canon who was advertising.

I don't know about that. If DSLRs take the status that Hasselblad and Zeiss film cameras once had, there will be a lot fewer made and a lot fewer brands to choose from. I don't know that I'd expect Pentax to be one of the survivors.

Having said that, I don't know that tablets, etc. are replacing cameras so much as supplementing them. It used to be that when you had your camera, you intended to take pictures. That still might be the case for most folks. Now, however, a lot of people just always have a camera.

That's my concern also. I worry that Pentax will just give up the effort, as they seemingly have low market share. The information in here that they're common in Asia is encouraging.

I have a really old Zeiss 35mm but I believe that they have never made the move to digital cameras. I wonder why?

I just posted a new thread on this, before I saw this one, but yes, we're rare. And I don't really get it.

I have loved Pentax since the 35mm film days and my DSLR Pentax takes great photos. I couldn't expect more out of a DSLR. But my Pentax is the only one I ever see.

Recently I was in Maui and saw a lot of DSLRs, but not one other Pentax. Not one. I just don't get it.
