For me, the biggest difference between zooms and primes may be the operational requirements. With primes, you need two cameras, at least. I know; I spent half a career toting twin Nikons with a 35 and an 85mm. Unless you're on some monastic One Lens, One Year routine, you need to be able to see and frame in separate focal lengths. Lens changes take time, and they're an awkward juggle that exposes your lenses and cameras to dust and droppage. Unless you're on some monastic One Lens, One Year routine, you need to be able to see and frame in separate focal lengths. Last week I was on a windy Pacific beach working with my new DA 300, and that was a delight. But I needed a second camera to cover more mainstream perspectives, too (a Fuji K-Pro 1 with kit zoom).
The only way I'd carry a single camera without a zoom for travel/documentary/street work would be if it were the Fuji X100T. It's fixed 35mm-eq. lens is supplemented with two screw-on accessory lenses that provide coverage of 28 and 50mm. Adding a conversion lenses on the fly is easier than changing lenses. Otherwise, it has to be a zoonm if only a short one like my favorite F 24-50/4.
