Well that certainly makes a difference. When I had my 55BB, I always struggled with it always shooting here in the woods under a canopy most of the time. I can see how the good bright light really helps the lens work.

Background.......what background?
Very nice results Ash - I am surprised with the sharpness and the great contrast of these images - the subjects just pop off the background.

I don't think your results are bad at all considering being hand-held at a slower shutter speed.
Give the lens a chance - practice with it some more with different shutter speed settings - also I highly recommend using a tripod with any lens that is 500mm.
I sold my Tamron 55BB some time back to help fund another lens purchase - I miss it enough that when I see another one come available for a decent price, I'll be getting another one.

As far as the rear filter - when I had my Tamron 55BB, I read that indeed the rear filter is required to complete the optical formula.

Wow Doc - great shots!
Now I am missing that lens even more, but so glad it is being put to good use and being enjoyed.
Thanks for sharing the images.

My first post here in the Mirror Club!
I've had my Tamron SP500 55BB for a month now, and just today started playing with it. I was ready to setup with a tripod, when I turned around and saw this frog at our spring overflow. No time to setup so I got as close as I dared, sat down, and with my elbows on my knees for support, made a couple shots.
Hand holding a 500mm lens is a trip! I never thought any would come out, but this one wasn't too bad.
