I'm a member of quite possible the biggest camera club in my town (ummm.. on the second thought, my town's got only one active photo club, and we have like 20-30 active members only :D ). As usual, plenty CaNikons, but there are 7 Pentaxian also :D! I have to say that with frequent close encounters, my canikon friend have come to respect the 'rare' quality of Pentax.

Okay, today I was shooting my town's parade with fellow photoclub members, in the middle of the show my Nikonian friend rush to me and told me that he spotted a foreigner shooting Pentax with a really huge lens some 1000 meters away down the road. I went searching, but I guess the odds of finding someone in the middle of a swarm of thousand of people...

I've seen a rapid growing of Pentax user in my country in recent months, not just new, first timers, but switchers.
We are no longer a cult, guys. If FF did materialize, we would be nothing but common people.. :D

A week ago, my Pentaxian group was invited by a local television show. There's five of us with K100D, K10D, K20D, K-x, K-r digitals, fully working Black KX and Super Program, and lots of 'iron and glass' lenses. Although none of us is with newer Pentax bodies -to match the newer canikon- the show was hot, lots of viewer's phone calls during and after the show, asking this and that, especially asking "where can I purchase Pentax?". After the show closed, the entire television crews swarmed us, asking, touching, testing -even comparing image results directly on a laptop- lots and lots of fingerprints :D

I thought I could "inspire" some too, with my K20D + BG + 72mm filtered Tamron 28-300 + bounce flash when I shoot a friend's wedding the other day.. and yes, while massaging my arm, I inspired myself to push myself to save for K5 :D

Now there are three Pentaxians in my neighboring area, including me. Recently we joined a local photo club, participated on a group photohunt, and joined their Facebook group as well. Them canikons users welcomed us well, they even didn't have enough guts to make fun of our 'cheap' gears, unlike when a low budget canikons joined in. We Pentaxian probably isn't that rare, but we are indeed different in a sense. In group photohunt, me and my Pentaxian friends do shoot 'differently'; we operate our gears differently. When it comes to resulting images posted on the groups Facebook page, our images are different, color tones are different. The thing is that we think thus act differently -photographically speaking.
..it's either fear, or hatred for those with differences..

In my country, them bodies will surely get newbies, for K100D and the like is selling far cheaper than the cheapest low-end canikons :) K100D is selling for about $200 complete with kit lens, while 1000D & D40 due to popularity usually $300 body only.
The good thing about being a small community, Pentax users in my country knows each other. We have a small internet forum and a Facebook group. Our gears are usually 'handed over from generation to generation'. My first Pentax, a K100D, I was the third owner. Now that camera belongs to my 'newbie' friend, sold it to him a year ago when I got a K20D from a friend who bought it new.

I will be seeing more Pentaxian..in the past month I've seen plenty of Pentax DSLRs hit my local internet marketplace. These are cameras sold by owners who take advantage of the newer bodies price cuts and the arrival of K-01. These used cameras will find themselves a new owner, usually newbies. I know this because two years ago I'm one of them newbies.. :)

Re-posted from somewhere :)
"..I'm not a professional photographer, not trying to be. I believe there are a lot more of me out there than the professional to be. Pentaxians is a small mass, but I've seen more joining than leaving. This I know why: we care less about market politics, but we do care enough about cost and prices and the results that comes out of a camera. One can outgrow Pentax, yes that means that person is no longer among 'we'. Pentax might not be making selling records no more, it may be a poor company. But hey, I feel more like home. Be it that Pentax is a looser and Pentaxians are losers, yet again we still here, enjoying life as it is, taking pictures and hold dear what should be the essence of photography.."

While photo-touring my area recently, I met a group of 'serious' foreign tourist. All geared up with heavy photographic equipment (yes, mostly canikon). A guy carrying a big backpack, and another smaller backpack full of gears, looked at my K20D and approached me and ask in a rather strange voice, "Pentax?". The guy is Nikonian. I smiled. He added, "Well, we have one with a Pentax". He pointed to a grey haired man.
Are Pentaxian mostly old and grey? :p

I read somewhere that your country in fact was a Pentax stronghold. So I say: reclaim the land! ;)

I, too, like your idea. Although I didn't really believe that other camera makers really 'open up' their firmwares intentionally to the public. I had a Canon 'bridge' camera before moving to Pentax, and I recall doing sort of a firmware 'hacking' to unleash some of the capabilities intentionally 'hidden' by the manufacturer :)
Anyway, it's doable and I believe we are going to need some Pentaxian hackers and coders to do this project.. ;)
