Are we really THAT rare?

It's sad to see these independent shops go out of business. Fortunately, we still have one left in my area, a camera sales and repair shop with processing and printing services. When I was in there the other day, they were really busy. I was glad to see that.

Ha! Same here. I'm on my second Subaru. Drove my first (used 1998 model I got in 2007) for 9 years and gave it to my son, who just sold it. And he bought another Subaru.

My first DSLR was a Pentax, my second one is, and my soon-to-be third one is going to be.

I guess we Pentaxians are cult-like, just like the Subie owners. LOL. Once you have one, you never look back. Be interesting to know how many others there are like us. One of the reasons I love Pentax is the build quality and toughness, just like Subaru.

Took our k100ds to a family picnic on Saturday (my k-7 is the camera I use for my business, so that doesn't leave home!), and have taken just a quick look at the shots--but they look fabulous! Some of my relatives have posted photos they took, and so far, if I do say so myself, mine look better. But, then, of course, nobody else there was shooting with a DSLR, at least from what I saw while I was there.

Wish the Pentax brand were better marketed, but then, again, as pointed out, the price would go up! In any event, I was in Best Buy with my family the other day, and was checking out the canikons and a Sony DSLR on display--my k-7 is still built like and feels like a tank compared to those.... Even my old k100ds, as inexpensive as it was when I bought it used, seems better built. I'll take my Pentax regardless of what anyone says! Back in the film days, Pentax wasn't so rare, and though still not as highly thought of as other brands, their users swore by them, as do we today!

I have the k100ds too, so if you're biased as to the great feel of it, then so am I! Yes, it is subjective--a lighter, smaller dslr might be just the thing for some people, but I prefer the heftier build. Each brand and each body style has its fans, that is certain. But, I did also try an Olympus 4/3 model--I mean shot with it, played with it, put it through its paces, not just test-handled it at a store, at the same time I tried the k100ds, and I sent the Olympus back. That's not to say the Pentax is "better," only that *I* liked it better. I haven't tried a k-r yet, but I'm pretty sure, at this point anyway, that the k-7 is my next buy, even though it's "old" (but it's newer than what I have now!).

I feel the brand is a very good value in the marketplace, and do hope they come out with more models once things are in their groove again after the upheaval of the sale to Ricoh.

It does seem as if very few people I know use Pentax; actually I think I'm the only one.

Interesting about the "age" thing. I am 57 and learned to shoot 35mm slr back in the mid 80s. Are many of us in that 50+ age range?

At that time, Pentax wasn't considered one of the "better" brands, at least not by the circle I hung with. Canon & Minolta were probably the most common, although Yashica had a very good following. I was a Minolta gal myself (only because I was able to buy an affordable used one for my photography class, but I learned to love it). But, having said that, I am really, really impressed with the Pentax dslr's and based on handling a few of the "others" recently, I think I'm hooked on Pentax--both because of the lens compatibility and because of the build--they just feel better in the hand, at least in my hand! And they "feel" better built--whether or not that's the case, I don't know enough to know. But, given my druthers, when I upgrade, it'll be to another Pentax.
