the fact that it's straight from the body explain why you didn't do any change. But, hey ! it's still very good !

maybe because a lot of people think that the lens and the body do all the work (and the protographer is useless) : |

After a lot of film session, let's be back to basics !
Pentax K-x @3200, kit lens @26mm, f4, Av mode and pop-up flash -0.7EV. Converted in B&W in CS5. many red light and the WB was impossible so here comes the B&W, savior of many situations !
A 350 shots session, during an afterwork party in Paris, France. 100 pictures came out really well, and they will be used by the tree guys (and friends btw) who are trying to emerge on the night scene of Paris.
A spare time work might be in the end, well paid, can be fun (and stressfull), but with many awesome people and in double awesome party :D

Nice shot ! i really like the "flood" of flags.
But i was wondering, i'm i the only one that see a slight magenta cast ? probably my screen i think.
Still the sky with a bit more of saturation (a polarizing filter ?) would made this picture perfect, IMO.
For information for those in Europe (like me) what was the occasion from planting so many flags (election, cimetery, kind of celebration ?)?

after some use, i feel that a very neutral color aspect is quite good in fact : it gives you more room to do whatever you want, without reducing the quality of the file.
this thread was supposed to be for the 18-55 I and II, but now i think the 18-135 as the 55-200 are "de facto" welcom in this thread.
The 18-135 is among my wish list lens (as the 16-50, 50-135, 10-17).

agreed ! and it push you back to some basics like framing and proper exposure, without (so much) the ability to hide some lack of those behind some blur or bokeh.
Speaking of this, i still have some way to go before mastering framing :) |

Yep, you just did ! And i'm going to say it too "i love the kit lens"
It's a very decent lens ! Just between 45mm and 55mm from f5.6 to 7.1 it's a bit soft, but for the rest of the range, it's a very good lens, considering the price !
Your picture is nice, with a ND filter you could do a awesome picture i bet !

Sure ! i can post a step by step if you want. It takes around 3 steps i guess :)
to be honest i did the one i posted on Photoshop, after i did played with the K-x.
here is the one with the K-x
As you can see, the K-x tend to darken to much the grey around the puddle, but here is how i did :
From a Raw, press the down arrow to open the processing menu.
Then go in "numeric filter" (2nd item from top left)
Then go on increase contraste (3rd from top left column)
Apply middle value minus 1 (might mean 2 out of 6)
then go adjusting setup (not sure about this one, it's the last one in left column, look like a tool box)
Then increase saturation +3 (2nd line)
Then dcecrease contraste -3 (4th line)
Press Ok
Save as
... processing ... done !
Here is how to do it with a software with better detail (yes, the K-x engine tend to destroy many -too ?- many details for my taste, and didn't increase enought the blue channel)
I used photoshop Camera Raw, but i think it can be done with any other software in fact.
here is the original Raw picture. As you can see the color are dull, due to the Raw format. However, you can make them more "PoP-y" if i may say so.
*As you can see, the center of the picture is a puddle, with a tree in reflection in it. the border of the picture are a drak grey rock.
*The fact that it's rather grey and a bit more dark than the rest of the picture is important here.
*This grey, somehow is a neutral color which is mostly affected by exposure and light, but rather not by color.
*Thus, playing with cursory did only affected the central part of the image (except when you go the extrem value of the cursory, of course).
I did use the "saturation" and "vibrancy" cursory.
*Both affect color but in a different way.
*Saturation, increase saturation of color for every color : green / red / blue channel are affected in the same way.
*Vibrancy, increase saturation too, but not in the same proportion in each channel. it increase more the blue channel than the green and red. if we summarize very simply it's like using a polarizing filter : the saturation increase, but the sky become "bluer", and if you underexpose it slightly with a digital filter (4th icone from the right, in the top line icone in the top left picture), you can obtain the electric sky of fashion magazine :)
Here is exemple of how saturation (left) and vibrancy (right) act. i pushed each cursory at it's max value (100).
To get my picture i did mix the two with a +50 vibrancy and +64 saturation. i did no other change (except automatique opticla correction for distortion and purple franging, thanks to the provided lens profile.)

Don't worry, not long ago i didn't know either what was a cactus system ! "Cactus" are some flash trigger unit : you "plug" one on the flash connector of the body, one on the connector of the flash, and when you press the shutter, no matter where the flash is (within 100m) it will fire. Pentax K-x, 1/160, f11, 100 iso, 2 flash AF280T (one on the scene, one on the K-x) aimed at a white card.
The main advantage of a Cactus setup is that all you need is a pair of flash. They can be cheap, no matter :) I use the AF280T (i have a pair of it), paid it 20$ both :D can only be set a full power (28NG) or half power (14NG). Recycle time is about 3/4 sec at full power. But i don't need more.
You can find other wireless trigger for cheaper than cactus btw.
i have one for the DA*55 but almost never used it, i should !
The picture deserve it :)

thank you
i've discovered the Cactus stuff, and i have to say that in the forest, it just help a lot ! but it need a little more work too...
Your shot is really nice too. I love this blue and saturated sky.
Did you use a filter (during shooting and/or PP) on the top of the image ? because the sky is super bright and still, there is details in the cloud.
