the wide fast end is much more important than tele, for me anyway,
with 16+Mpixels can always crop the image to get tele effect.
My favorite walk around lens is Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 Macro ( non HSM) , can get them for ~$200 used

new lens : Sigma 18-250 3.5-6.3 Macro HSM ( very similar design to Pentax DA 18-250) , I pre-ordered it for 495.06 ( incl delivery to Australia) , it looks like the price went now up to $549 :

DA 55-300 can get it for $250-400 used ( or DA L even cheaper - the same optics), some photos:
