There's a co-mingling zone where all sorts of shenanigans go on. Outside of that, they stick to their own kind.

Once we had Baltimore Orioles and Bullock's Orioles, then they were combined and we just had the Northern Oriole, and now we have the Baltimore and Bullock's again. The poor birds mustn't know whether they are coming or going!

Based my ancient African field guides from when I was there in the 1970s, looks like a Black Crake (unless it's been lumped or split since that time)

I'll try to get a Wilson's Warbler in the upcoming Spring migration but they are more common out west than here.

You might as well throw in Burchell's Zebra as well. Are there any more Burchell wildlife?
Here in North America we could play a game with Alexander Wilson's birds. Here's the Plover and the Snipe for starters. Would anyone like to contribute the Warbler, the Phalarope or the Petrel? |

American Kestrel - one of my first DSLR bird shots, from 2008. Taken at 200mm because I didn't have my 55-300mm lens (or my more recent DA*300mm) at that time. |

Years ago I worked in Malawi, where in the Chewa language "l"s and "r"s seem to be pretty much interchangeable. Piri-piri was usually pronounced with an "r" sound though. Fond memories of piri-piri potato chips, and piri-piri shrimp at places along the Mozambique border.

A closer look. It's really hard to get the eyes to show in these birds. |

I spent a couple of years in the Lower Shire in the early 1970's and made several trips to the Lake. We used to sleep on the beach - colourful cichlids under the water, monkeys in the trees, fish eagles, flying by. Pre-AIDS, so it was a different world.

I remember seeing and hearing fish eagles on Lake Malawi - long time ago!
Couldn't resist posting one of my favourite loon shots - we were lucky enough to witness a post-breeding "social gathering" on a lake where we were staying. This was a very noisy event. |

The reddish in the wing on the (Male?) bird to the right suggests Gadwall.
