I'm not disputing that this was done, we used plumb bobs and hand levels to insure level measuring.
In our area we were often surprised at the accuracy of early surveys made with compass and chain.

Sorry Racer, not much I can add about the old styles of measurement since I never used them.
When I started in surveying, in the mid 1960's, we used what we called a chain, but it was a solid 100 foot steel tape.
Then came electronic measuring devices, and GPS was coming on strong when I retired.
I recently found this and enjoyed it, others might too if they have a half hour to kill. AETN - It Started Here: Early Arkansas and The Louisiana Purchase |

I've thought about something like that, but decided I like some blur on the wings, seems more natural and gives the feeling of action, at least to me.

A volunteer sunflower grew just below the deck, one seed of a few hundred pounds of black oilers from winter feeding.
Goldfinch have been pulling the still "wet" seeds and stockpiling them on the back of the head, I assume to let them dry for easier cracking.
I don't think Flickr will show the info for these, but they are with the KP, DA 300* plus 1.4 HD TC, f6.7, 400 ISO.
Cropped (shot through a gap in the deck's balusters). 2018-07-29_08-48-57 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-07-28_07-11-58 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-07-28_06-17-12 by robtcorl, on Flickr

I did read that orioles will toss the cowbird's eggs out if they lay in their nest.

For anyone thinking about getting Pentax's 1.4x TC and wondering how much more reach it will give the DA* 300, here's my neighbor's chimney without, and with. 2018-05-10_04-50-38 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-10_04-51-02 by robtcorl, on Flickr
And this one, cropped, was me seeing how close the combo would still focus.
I'm guessing this was about 12 feet away. 2018-05-11_08-28-32 by robtcorl, on Flickr

My HD 1.4x TC came just in time yesterday to get this series. (loving it!)
All SOOC, no cropping, only a slight straightening of a few, 300* plus TC, f6.7, 800 ISO. 2018-05-11_08-26-08 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-11_08-26-31 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-11_08-26-53 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-11_08-27-27 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-11_08-27-48 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-11_08-28-05 by robtcorl, on Flickr

Most all of my orioles have moved on, these are from a couple of days ago.
I didn't straighten the first one, it would have cut off most of the left and right birds.
My HD 1.4x TC came today, got some shots with it that I'll post tomorrow.
DA 300* shots, cropped except for the first. 2018-05-10_04-52-19 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-10_04-52-36 by robtcorl, on Flickr 2018-05-10_04-52-52 by robtcorl, on Flickr

Welcome to the club Bert!
Truth be told, I think a maple stick would be more fitting. :)

Several years ago I saw a red-tail carrying a snake. It slipped out of his grasp and he caught it midair.
No (film) camera in hand at the time of course.

I haven't visited this thread in awhile, plenty of great shots added since!
This old guy is pretty excited, I have the 1.4x TC arriving soon for my DA 300*
Couldn't justify it at $600, found a mint one on eBay for $375 (my best offer accepted) from Robert's Camera.
I had never seen a Baltimore oriole before May 1st, started feeding them jelly and oranges, ended up with a small flock hanging around since then.
Here's a few with the 300, x-posted to the best KP shots thread. All cropped, shot through 2 panes of glass and sometimes through mini blinds too. This series is more about sequence than quality since they were shot through open mini blinds and 2 panes of glass.
No crop, KP with the DA 300*.
A northern flicker shows up and eyeballs my suet cake, then goes up to dine.
Then a starling, a bird I despise, eyeballs the flicker and the suet cake.
Chases off the flicker and takes over.
The suet cake is left in the plastic tub and hung upside down to try and discourage these pests.
You would think that a flicker, with a longer pecker, :) would not be intimidated by these %$#*&%$s!

At rise last night we had clouds, the best viewing for us was supposed to be this morning around 6:15, and we had clouds. :(

Of all the lenses I own, or have owned, the DA 300* is my favorite.
I'd like to have the 1.4x TC but can't justify the price since I'm happy, for now, cropping.
The great IQ of the 300* allows for tighter/better crops than my DA 55-300 did, even though I was always pretty happy with that lens.

Waxwings are one of my favorites too.
Last November a small flock landed in a tree top about 40 yards away.
Shot with my KP and the DA 300* it took some heavy cropping to see them better. |

Very nice!
That cedar waxwing looks like it could take on Godzilla. :)
