Blue moon shot with my old Super Cosina 100-500mm on the 500 end of things and stopped down a bit, then cropped slightly.

I wasn't expecting much from it. I'm at the 'user error' level with this lens more than anything these days. I enjoyed the IQ so much I hunted its baby brother the 75-300mm down and so far it seems just as quality as the bigger lens is.

Shot this gal back in February, didn't get around to working the image until today.

Not bad for a 30+ year-old push/pull superzoom.

Super Cosina 100-500mm @ 500mm, 1/640 sec, ISO 1600 on the K-70 from (literally) my front door from not very far away.

Picked up a 75-300 and did some test running this evening before dark.

This is not-quite a 100% crop.

Super Cosina 75-300mm macro, f/8, ISO 1250, 1/400 second. Had the camera in aperture and shutter mode since the camera kept wanting to shoot at 1/125 so had to work around that.

Not bad as I was stupidly far away from him for this shot.

Shot this one last month with the Super Cosina 100-500mm on the 500mm end, with a 3xTC tossed in for good measure just to see how it would behave.

Handheld, which probably didn't help any before I abused the heck out of lightroom to process it.

Not a *great* photo, but just being able to look at it and recognize what it is is something.

The Super Cosina at 500mm, 100% crop, 1/125 second, tripod mounted, ISO 800.

Playing with the Super Cosina some more. This was at 500mm or very close to it.

What happens when you slap a 2x Teleconverter onto a 40 year old 500mm superzoom?

You discover just how amazing Pentax IBIS really is.

1/250 second, 1,000mm, and handheld with a K-70.

Playing with the Super Cosina again. This was a safety shot for my Single In I'm in (because... ducks), but I'll take it.

That'd be where you'd need to stack, and even then it'd be so tiny it may not be worth it.

More mucking about with the Cosina. The realization the issues I'm having is user error and not the lens is kind of humbling. When I get it right though, it just makes me want more. All three of these were taken at the 500mm end.

Still testing the waters with that 100-500mm. The weather's been decidedly uncooperative as far as having decent light for such a lens, meaning I have to crank my ISO and swing the post processing bat a bit harder than I'd normally like to.

That said, this was handheld, f/11 if I remember right, and 'only' 1/400 at ISO6400, so I can't gripe too much for what its giving me.

I do get some mild CA, but that was kind of expected. The lens absolutely shines for 'close' photography though, which while it wasn't why I bought it definitely makes it worth keeping.

A few more test shots, all were either 3200 or 6400ISO because it was very late afternoon and raining when I had the chance to try these.

First the 'brick wall' shots of the mill across from the park where I shot from.

100mm

500mm

Kingbird. I really wish I had better light, but the modern ISO capabilities combined with decent de-noise software helped a bit. This was a near 100% crop. I think I nailed focus on the leaf more than the bird, so more light = higher aperture I can play with next time.

And to show just how awful the light/weather was while I was shooting...

First impressions are it handles CA VERY well. Maybe it'll be worse under actual sunlight, but so far I haven't seen it very much. Maybe the overall cast in the duck photo, but thats about it.

I also discovered the lens does not have creep. It's like 2 pounds of Push/Pull so I have no clue how thats even a thing. Maybe if I waited long enough it would creep on me, but just muddling about for 20 minutes I didn't see any happening.

Overall? Worth the 90 bucks I spent on it, definitely.

That 100-500mm Cosina arrived early!

First quick impressions:

Was my copy ever even used? I've never had an original case arrive in pristine condition before.

It's lighter than expected...

That minimal focus throw... HOLY COW. Less than a body length!

I think I'll keep her...

A few hand-held 'I need to test this thing' shots. Any errors were on my part for forgetting to properly stop down meter. All exposure times were less than what would have been desired back in the day, but IBS was on for 500mm and ISO was cranked to 3200...

Roadsign across the street...

'Macro' mode' (shot from about 4 feet away)

Ditto...

Just bagged a really old school 100-500mm off the Bay. I'll share samples when it comes in if it doesn't absolutely suck, or I throw my back out lugging the thing around.

Mine is the Tokina-made 300mm with the K-mount. Its a very decent lens (for what it is) and once you stop down a peg or two is a handy, lightweight little (for a 300mm) lens. Even with the 3X attached the combinatioon is still hand-holdable save for the fact that its impossible to get a shutter speed fast enough to actually use without getting into crazy-high ISOs.

The IQ with this shot is pretty horrid, but considering its a $30 lens on a $10 TC, I can live with it.

I lost my sunlight before I had a chance to try shooting this guy - I'll be back again for certain considering they have their nest somewhere exceedingly easy to view.

300mm + 3X TC (the fringing... oh man, the fringing... *shudders*)

I'm just going to throw a bit of non-birdy abstraction at everyone, simply because I love how this shot came out and I'm feeling compelled to spam it where ever it may fit. :)

Sears (Tokina-made) 300mm f/5.6, wide open, right about at the MFD. EXIF is off because I forgot to change things when swapping lenses. The shot was remarkably non-botched as a result.

Here's another shot of that jay from the other day with that 300mm Sears. I spent a while nuking most of the sensor damage from this shot, which helps a lot. I think this one may have been a bit more open than the other at f/8 or even f/5.6. This is uncropped - he (or maybe she, the bird's mate was hanging around as well) landed that close to me and did the Blue Jay thing and gave no cares about me right there or not.

Only if you have a two year old who's too smart for his own good.

I was cleaning my sensor and my boy asked me what I was doing. Trying to explain in 2-year old terms, I told him I was 'erasing the spots from my camera".

Then I went up to go to the bathroom and made a major error of judgment - I left my exposed camera in range of him.

I get back, and here he is with a pencil 'erasing' down in where he saw me futzing around two minutes earlier. He left a few small globs of pencil eraser on the sensor that wouldn't brush off or blow off with the rocket blower, so I just went on to trying a wet clean.

Protip: Pencil rubber reacts chemically with the wet cleaning chemicals, and will melt and make an irremovable shell on what they were touching. :)

The scratches came about when I tried removing the rubber and realized they weren't going to budge.

Yep. The sensor has a thin coating of melted rubber on it, and the scratches are from where I tried removing the rubber with no luck. I can usually just hang out down around f/2 and avoid it even showing, but at 300mm, I didn't have anywhere close to that option, let alone when I dropped it down even more to avoid the CA the lens is prone to wide open.

I've been using my Sears 300mm prime for this month's Single in challenge, and part of the trick for me is my camera is heavily damaged. Despite that, I had a blue jay stalk me today, so I fired off some shots (and actually stopped down to f/11 to nuke any CA that may have wanted to creep in) and wound up getting Explored on flickr as a result, so I figured I'd share the shot over here.

Its definitely an 'if only' situation where I wish the camera was up to par with the lens and the subject.
