Super Cosina 100-500mm f/5.8-8 MC Macro
I'm discovering this is a great 'stingey-bitey thing' lens since to get this kind of shot I still have to be like 10 feet away to do so. Canadian Thistle by Jody Roberts, on Flickr

How about some budget zoom bokeh?

So yep, none of these shots were taken wide open, this cheap old zoom is a bokeh beast. The lens is a Miranda 70-210mm variable aperture... something. Want to say 4.0-5.6.

In going back and pulling some sample shots I took with my FA28-90, I realized just why I love that cheap piece of plastic so much. That thing can crank out bokeh even stopped down - I used it as my daily walkaround lens, and so never really tried much 'artsy' stuff like I would with my manual primes, which is a pity in hindsight. Come tax season when I grab a K-30 or K-5II I'll have to see what all I can do with the thing when I actually try. Crossposted, but I just re-discovered this shot I'd taken tonight while looking for examples from my cheap 28mm sears lens.
It kinda has a bit of a bokesplosion going on. Photographer; Lewiston, Maine by Jody Roberts, on Flickr

Today, I learned that my plasticy FA 28-90 is a fantastic bokeh lens, even stopped down.
Here are three shots from today that kind of shows off what that cheap lens pulled off for me.
First was a railroad overpass, second was a scrubby pine next to the apartment building, and thrid was a screwup (shot it at... f/20?). I'm including it hair-on-the-sensor and all just because I was amazed that I even had bokeh and that the bokeh wasn't horrible at such a narrow aperture.
Only very mild cropping and leveling was done via Picasa on these. New PC means I haven't had the chance to get anything decent on for editing installed yet. I've had people say that about shots where I was going for the shallow depth of field as well.
This one sticks in my mind in particular from people complaining that the DoF was too narrow. I'm like "But... but that was the POINT!" D-: Day 42 - Tau Tau by Jody Roberts, on Flickr

Some of us are just insulated against the shock of that kind of humor, don't worry.

Yes, please. :)

Sears 75-260, f4.5, shot somewhere on the wider end of things. I really do need to keep better track of what apertures I'm shooting when going manual. :) Quality is affected due to the fact I shot this through a plate glass window when he landed all of 6 feet away from me. I've taken to putting a signature bar on my photos - not sure if it'll become a habit or not but I kind of like it. Here's some recent bokeh, mostly courtesy of a cheap 75-260 Sears f/4.5 close focus sometimes combined with an old Vivitar 2x teleconverter. Auto Sears MC 75-260 f/4.5. Bought it without knowing the thing even HAD a close focus setting, but even more the bokeh it produces! Its nice all the way across the range, even at f/22. The lens is slow, but I can live with that.
