Take the pledge - No new Pentax lens purchases

Canon 70-200 f/4: $700
Pentax 60-250 f/4: $1600

I think there's a disparity in all three DA* lenses.

I think a lot of the DA lenses are still not competitive but as Ned said there's not always a direct comparator.

All brands were cheap before 2007, apparently.

It's silly. In his page where he says film DR is better than digital, Ken Rockwell actually cites the study where it says that digital has better DR than film.

Don't trust KR. He gets some things really correct and then completely flubs other stuff. Look at his 645D review if you want some laughs.

We don't really know all the details, but the price history seems to indicate that the retailers felt it was necessary to sell the DA* lenses at MSRP.

Either

A) Pentax made a big goof in telling retailers what was acceptable;
B) Pentax made a big goof in 'growing the DA* brand'.

Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things but I was hoping prices would've stabilized lower on some of the lenses (namely 60-250) by now.

I was a loyal Pentaxian Ambassador until they were complete-cold-corporate to me. They could earn my trust back but they're starting from a negative baseline. I love to root for the underdog but I also agitate against loyalty to a group that eschews me.

I don't know, to me it's just a corporation that wants to sell me stuff. I'm taking this way more lighthearted than you for some reason.

Right now I'm staying the course, like I think most rational people would. I'm also keeping an eye out for good deals on some other corporation's goods and if I can find a better use for my money I'll switch... like I feel most rational people would. If in the meantime Pentax has an awesome 560mm f/5.6 for $1k and a D800 clone for $1.5k I'll stay. If it's somewhere in the middle, maybe I'll maintain two systems for a while.

We'll see.

He didn't modify the pledge to suit his convenience. He was quite within the confines of the pledge when he purchased his lens, and quite within the spirit of the pledge when he expanded the definition.

Its the price at which I'm willing to sell. Ned thinks it's too low, but I disagree.

I've been quite sincere with you, but your vocabulary might indicate you're looking for a fight?

So I better get out while I still can, right?!?

Ha! I actually have two lenses on Amazon. One I offered here at a price lower than the price I had at Amazon at the time. Thanks for the rminder, I've meant to withdraw both offers for sale for the 16-50. I had an offer to purchase (on Amazon at the higher rate) but decided against selling. The other (60-250) I was planning on offering here at a reduced price as well but haven't completely decided about that lens yet.

Pentax makes lenses and cameras that I love (but not in the physical sense :)) It's disappointing to me that they've been making such bone-headed decisions lately but I really can't do anything about it other than tell them why I'm not purchasing their products... and then not purchase their products.

If they make better decisions in the future I'll change my mind.

I think you might be a bit misinformed. The OP was always about a 'boycott' of the lenses that were affected by the unilateral agreement. The 'boycott' (pledge) always only applied to new lenses, and the Pentax Limited that docwrm (sp?) bought was used and therefore not affected by Pentax Fool's Day (tm) policy.

He seems to have since edited the original pledge to allow purchases of lenses that are sold in disregard to the policy - i.e. retailers that sell below the pricing agreement. That seems consistent with the original purpose to me. If it doesn't to you, I'm a little confused as to why, and would appreciate you explaining it to me.

You're probably too humble to admit it - so let me say it for you. You, sir, have distilled 1000 comments into three witty words.

You are my hero.

That is a gem. Politician speak.

General People: "We're considered that your policy A will be affecting us in a B manner."
Politician: "This notion that I'm not concerned about C is completely false."

To be fair he shouldn't be telling us everything. Of course that doesn't excuse the politico speech.

Some random, general rambling only remotely connected to your post -

I think that raising the prices and changing the warranty in one action would've been a PR disaster.

Oh look! Pentax charges you twice as much for a lens, because they know they'll need to send you two of them!

What they really should've done was to introduce a 16-50 V1.1 with the price increase. Which incorporates some of the following (Pentax, please choose at least three)

1) Change the color of the decorative ring
2) Gen 1.1 SDM motor (call it SDM2, even if the only things that change are that the tolerance spec's are slightly changed)
3) Slightly improved coating (or even just a coating optimized for different scenarios)
4) Slight glass change (least likely and least recommended)
5) Improved WR
6) Silver color

Most of these things are marketing. Hell, basically all of them are marketing and none of them are really any substantial improvement (in the way I'm intending they be implemented). But for better or worse Pentax USA wasn't/won't be able to 'force' a 16-50 v1.1 through PRIC.

However... the limitations imposed on Pentax USA doesn't absolve them from the mistake of doubling the market price overnight. The current way Pentax operates would be unacceptable if I were Supreme Overlord of Pentax. (I'm not sure how to apply for that job but I think I'd be great for it (free FF for everybody!!)).

Many (former) Pentax ambassadors are going to remember Pentax Fool's Day for a loooong time.

For what it's worth (not much) I don't really think there's all that much correlation between QC and warranty length.

But assuming there was such a correlation, you'd have to say that the since the warranty hasn't been increased, the QC hasn't increased, correct?

In other words, they're hinting at giving us something in the future and making us pay now?

Absolutely, and I thanked Pentax for the roadmap. But those lenses aren't out now, right (except for the 40xs which seems like a re-casing of the 40)

Not to be repetitive... but my point is, in other words, they're hinting at giving us something in the future and making us pay now?

I think it's awesome that there's a broader implementation planned with (perhaps/assumed) better stuff. Hopefully it's better still than the competition which right now looks to have stolen Pentax's thunder (D800, 5D3, D3200). Will the bodies/lenses be worth it for new customers to pay prices higher than Canon? We'll see. I hope so, because I already have the glass. If Pentax keeps these lens prices up, I can make a tidy profit. If Pentax goes down in flames, well, I've lost several thousand dollars.

The only lens I was really looking to acquire is the 560 f/5.6, which I was waiting/hoping would be a great reason for people to flock to Pentax. With the latest lens prices, though, it seems as if offering value to the consumer is not Pentax's priority.

a) is there any indication that Pentax has 'done' something about QC? Sincere question, what's your reasoning there?
b) I'm not sure this move strengthen's the US market, but I'm not sure it doesn't, either. It certainly doesn't help with Target, etc.
c) We haven't seen any new lenses yet. I'm not ready to call them vaporware but you don't raise prices first and provide value to your customer last.

Yup. I'm semi-actively looking for decent deals on Nikon lenses. I was the second highest bid to a nikon lens a day or two ago.

I'm not going to 'take the pledge' but my faith and enthusiasm for Pentax is severely eroded. I'm currently NOT a brand ambassador... when people ask me what camera to buy, I'll hesitate to mention Pentax.

Pentax seems to have a bit of insanity to work out. The prices are laughable.
