There are a million 43ltd and da*55 photos though which are not in the 50 club. Strangely enough people tend to shoot with their favourite lenses, and their favorite lenses are also often their best lenses. The fa 50 and da 50 are nobody's favorite if they have pockets deep enough to afford limiteds of star lenses.

The key with nano coats is getting the partical size right, the particals are huge compared to what is vaporised and deposited by vaccume in traditional multicoats. I am working from memory but i rember when the HD limiteds came out that it was stated that it was much cheaper as vaccum desposition was not used. Aerobright 2 being nanocoat on smc was stated when the 70-200/2.8 was released. I may have been putting 2 & 2 together since when HD was released it was stated it could be used by itself or in conjunction with SMC for even better performance. Then aerobright 2 was stated as being more robust than the original so logically it would use hd, although it could be a different formula.

The introduction of the II models sort of messed up the sequence. I’m waiting for a K3 replacement as well but I don’t expect to see one until Sony releases an APS-C version of is new BSI 150mp medium format sensor. The KP would be really nice for shooting with limiteds mind you.

HD coating doesn’t use vapour deposition but instead its pained on, making it much cheaper to apply as a consequence. Its a layer of hard bonded silica nanospheres. The bonding mechanism is what makes it special, as other nanocoatings are extremely fragile. Aerobright 2 was originally described as HD over SMC while Aerobright 1 was a fragile nanocoat over SMC. The marketing on the *50 saying ABC2 is aerobright over multiple layers of HD does not make any sense, so I’m going to assume its a marketing error. Nanocoats and multi coats work by two different mechanisms. I makes sense to use them together.

Its been made with future FF cameras in mind, not 8 year old APS-C Cameras. 43ltd and 55/1.4 give great results on APS-C. The New 11-18/2.8 is being made with the KAF3 mount so that older users do have access, so its not like they don’t care about legacy camera users. At some point they need to move forward and doing so with lenses that are covered by existing older lenses is a good way to do it, especially since the target audience is K1 users.

The whole delay was caused by slow throughput due to the high precision requirements and QC. Doubling the size of the production line and no of staff assembling the lenses is a huge cost that can be avoided just by taking their time. Overcapacity is a killer in manufacturing.

The upgrade cycle is dead as the technology has matured. We haven’t seen a new aps-c sensor since the K3 came out, presumably why its replacement has been put on the back burner. The key for manufacturing is to match capacity to output. Pentax has already cut cost by outsourcing, stoped trying to compete for entry level consumers with the huge cost involved in suppling dying B&M stores, and has instead gone after informed customers who value all the features pentax brings (which compared to canon and Nikon is a lot) Why would a Pentax user leave if he looses performance by doing so. Hence why releasing products such as the DFA*50 which are “Best in class” is the perfect strategy moving forwards. It retains customers because they loose out if they leave.
