FastStone Image Viewer and extracting Jpg's from RAW DNG's

True, but there is no option that I can see to change custom image after the fact. I do most further processing with ACDSee, but often like the start from initial camera/DCU5 processing: often it's enough for casual family activities. My needs are pretty basic, tweaking light levels, colors, etc. I'm also not trying to sell anyone on ACDSee, I'm just used to it.

FastStone seems interesting and I especially like the default full screen view with menus appearing when hovering at the margins. I'm not sure I'll go further with it, though remain appreciative for what I've learned in this thread.

This has been a very informative thread; much appreciated. Interestingly, it has given me a new appreciation of DCU5 now that I understand more about extracting vs save as, etc. I'm going to be using it as a first review/cull of my raw files (KP) because it allows me to leverage the power of custom images as a starting point, easily changing selections after the fact. IOW, I shoot "Bright" by default, and with DCU5, I can easily change to another custom image selection if needed. It's like working with in camera processing from the comfort of my laptop.

Your comprehensive response is very helpful and will probably change my initial workflow steps. One question: are your experiences based on using DNG or PEF as camera RAW files?

Shooting a KP, I find that the camera processed image is pretty good most of the time, but like BruceB, would like the extra headroom of RAW v jpg and dislike the speed penalty of Raw+.

For now, I've settled on using RAW with mass in-camera conversion to tiff. Before downloading to my computer, I parse my photo's of obvious crap shots, then convert all to TIFF. It seems that camera settings at the time the photo was taken are used when converting, though I have not extensively tested this.

After which I transfer all to my computer. That gives me the choice of starting with unprocessed or camera processed shots while maintaining lots of headroom if needed, before saving as jpg. Usually I simply tweak the tiff file. In-camera converting to tiff can be done quickly, a folder at a time. This works for me until I learn of something better.
